From processing materials to loading Great Lakes vessels, our team is helping keep construction projects moving across the region. 🚢 Working in support of Fritz Enterprises at our West 3rd Street facility along the Cuyahoga River, Independence Excavating is under contract with Fritz to process more than 600,000 tons per year of air-cooled blast furnace slag. Through a multi-stage crushing and screening operation, our team transforms this material into specification-sized aggregates used in asphalt pavement, concrete, concrete blocks and bricks, pavers, and other infrastructure applications throughout Northeast Ohio and across the Great Lakes. As part of the process, residual iron is recovered through magnetic separation and recycled back into the steelmaking process, maximizing the value of every ton of material. Once processing is complete, a portion of the finished aggregate moves directly to our adjacent dock, where our crews load approximately 15,000 to 17,000 tons onto Great Lakes vessels in as little as 8 to 12 hours. Each shipment requires close coordination between our team and the vessel crew to safely and efficiently deliver material to Fritz’s customers across the region. New iron has arrived. 💪 To help power the new Huntington Bank Field project, we've added three brand-new Cat 775 haul trucks to our fleet. Before they hit the ground, each truck was assembled on site — including the installation of its haul bed. Check out the timelapse for a behind-the-scenes look at these machines coming together. Built to haul up to 70 tons of material in a single trip, these additions help increase efficiency, boost production, and ensure we have the right equipment to keep this exciting project moving forward. Project Highlight: Homer City Generation⚡ Our demolition team was brought in to help fast-track the transformation of the former Homer City Generating Station, previously the largest coal-burning power plant in Pennsylvania, into a site ready for redevelopment. Working on an accelerated timeline, our team led the removal of remaining structures while adapting to added scope, including foundation demolition, concrete processing, and environmental support. The effort quickly scaled, with 130 team members and more than 65 pieces of equipment supporting operations. In early 2026 alone, the team processed nearly 90,000 tons of material, including 32,000 tons in March, contributing to more than 120,000 gross tons of scrap removed and recycled overall. Despite evolving conditions and a tight schedule, the project stayed ahead of plan and was completed safely with zero lost-time incidents and zero recordables. As we continue our Built in America series celebrating projects that helped shape our communities, we're looking back at the Abram Creek Improvement Project — a milestone that supported the expansion of Cleveland Hopkins International Airport. Awarded in 2001 by the City of Cleveland's Department of Port Control, this complex project laid the groundwork for the airport's new 9,000-foot runway. Our team enclosed nearly one mile of Abram Creek within four parallel reinforced concrete culverts, installed under strict environmental controls while maintaining the flow of the creek throughout construction. Innovation played a major role in the project's success. Using a custom-modified CAT 988F loader, our crews installed more than 2,300 reinforced concrete pipe sections, eliminating the need for cranes, increasing productivity, and placing more than 3.5 miles of pipe. The team then placed 3.5 million cubic yards of engineered fill to transform the deep ravine into the foundation for future airport growth. The project also included environmental remediation, demolition work on adjacent NASA Glenn property, and the installation of a 120-inch stormwater line beneath an active taxiway during a tightly coordinated 10-day closure. Completed on time, on budget, and in full environmental compliance, the Abram Creek Improvement Project remains a testament to the innovation, teamwork, and execution that continue to define our work today. Continuing our “Built in America” series, we're taking a look back at the Cleveland Medical Mart & Convention Center, a transformative downtown redevelopment project completed in partnership with Turner Construction. As an integral member of the project team, Independence Excavating performed mass and selective demolition, earth retention, dewatering, nearly 200,000 cubic yards of excavation, 10,000 linear feet of utility installation, 48,000 cubic yards of geofoam installation, and extensive site restoration work. Working closely with project stakeholders, our team also helped develop innovative construction approaches that accelerated the schedule by four months while delivering the project significantly under budget. The project was completed with more than 250,000 man-hours worked safely. More than a decade later, the facility remains a key part of downtown Cleveland and stands as a testament to the power of collaboration, innovation, and teamwork.
