I had a wonderful time at #NACCHO360 presenting alongside Evelyn Kelly on the environmental impacts of our increasingly digitally-led lives and data centers. I unpacked recent state legislation and local policies to address these impacts, and we both discussed how public health can be active participants in discussions to help inform those charged with weighing the health costs and potential benefits of data center development in their communities. Evelyn is directly involved in these conversations, and grassroots efforts in Maryland and the mid-Atlantic region (e.g., where data center alley is located), where this issue is felt most acutely. Several states and communities are calling on public health to meet the need for evidence-based information & to assess and monitor PH impacts, but what does this look like in practice? That is the key question we discussed with our session participants, and hope to discuss more in the future. Let’s not wait for a mandate to get involved. It is time for public health to show up to the table, and help shape the future of responsible digital infrastructure across the U.S. Thank you for having us NACCHO. At IPHI, we know that community health improvement is not defined by a completed plan, but it’s defined by the relationships, partnerships, and actions that continue long after the plan is published. Community Health Needs Assessments (CHNAs) and Community Health Improvement Plans (CHIPs) are powerful tools for listening to communities, identifying priorities, and creating pathways for meaningful change. But the true measure of impact comes from continued engagement, transparency, and accountability with the communities we serve. We appreciate this important reminder that progress is measured not only by long-term outcomes, but also by the trust, collaboration, and shared momentum built along the way. One of the biggest challenges in community health improvement isn’t developing the plan—it’s sustaining momentum after it’s published. Through CHNAs and CHIPs, communities generously share their experiences, identify priorities, and help shape solutions. A fair question they often ask in return is: “What happened after the last plan?” That question is about more than accountability. It’s about trust. Strong community partnerships aren’t built every three years during a planning cycle. They’re built through consistent communication, shared decision-making, transparency, and showing up between planning cycles. When communities see that their voices influence action—not just reports—they’re more likely to stay engaged. Another challenge is measurement. The outcomes we care about most—improved health, reduced disparities, and stronger communities—often take years to achieve. While we work toward those long-term goals, we also need meaningful indicators that tell us whether we’re building the relationships, systems, and momentum needed to create lasting change. I’d love to hear from others working in community and population health: How do you measure progress before long-term outcomes are visible? What indicators tell you you’re moving in the right direction?
