A #cyberattack targeting over 30 U.S. water utilities just occurred. And it exposed critical #vulnerabilities in the nation's infrastructure. State and federal authorities are investigating a highly coordinated cyberattack that targeted the operational #technology of more than 30 #municipal water utilities across Minnesota on July 26 and 27. The #digital #assault targeted critical #computerized #controls used to operate wells, water #treatment facilities, water #towers, and #wastewater lift stations. In the city of Braham, the intrusion temporarily knocked the local water treatment plant offline and disabled its well operating #controls, forcing public works crews to run manual overrides to restore services within two hours. Other communities, including Plymouth, Maple Plain, and South St. Paul, also reported disrupted automated #systems, but quick backup actions ensured that #water quality and supplies remained safe and uncontaminated. While investigators from Minnesota IT Services and the #FBI have yet to officially attribute the attack to a specific actor, the tactics and timing strongly align with recent federal warnings regarding Iran-linked #hacker groups targeting industrial controls. Amazon Wants to Connect Your #Smartphone Directly to #Space. Amazon has asked the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (#FCC) for permission to deploy up to 5,105 #Satellites for a new direct-to-device (D2D) #network. If approved, compatible smartphones and other #devices would be able to connect directly to satellites, allowing users to stay connected even in places where traditional #mobile #towers do not exist. The proposed #system is part of Amazon's growing Project #Kuiper satellite programme and is designed to work alongside the company's planned acquisition of satellite operator Globalstar. By combining its own low #Earth #orbit satellites with Globalstar's #spectrum and #infrastructure, Amazon aims to provide satellite #connectivity for people living, #travelling, or working in #remote and underserved #regions. The #network is expected to support much more than everyday #communication. #Amazon says it could assist #emergency responders during natural disasters, improve search-and-rescue operations, and provide reliable connectivity for commercial fleets, remote worksites, and supply chains operating far beyond the reach of conventional #cellular networks. If approved, the service will compete directly with SpaceX's STARLINK #Mobile, which already offers direct-to-cell connectivity through partnerships with mobile carriers. The competition marks the beginning of a new era in satellite communications, where smartphones may no longer depend entirely on ground-based towers to stay connected. Amazon currently has more than 390 satellites in orbit and plans to begin its initial Project Kuiper internet service later this year. The company expects its direct-to-device network to begin deployment in 2028, bringing satellite connectivity one step closer to becoming an everyday feature of modern mobile devices.

WhatsApp has finally announced a major set of new calling features, led by the introduction of calling support on WhatsApp Web. Users can now make and receive audio and video calls, including one-on-one and group calls, directly through WhatsApp Web in a supported browser, without downloading a separate app. All calls are end-to-end encrypted, free to use and have no time limits. The web version also supports screen sharing, reactions and a dedicated call history tab. WhatsApp has also introduced several additional calling features. Call Transfer allows users to move an active group call from their phone to WhatsApp Web or the desktop app without disconnecting. Waiting Room gives hosts greater control over group calls by allowing them to approve participants before they join. QuickHD delivers high-definition video from the opening moments of a call, while Noise Suppression filters out background sounds to help users communicate more clearly in noisy environments.
