In the late 1960s, high failure rates among new business start-ups made bankers wary. Chuck Chandler didn’t see it that way. During his leadership, First National Bank in Wichita (the bank that would become INTRUST) would become a leading small business lender in the nation. Adamant about the value of searching out potential customers with new ideas, Chuck believed in the Small Business Administration’s (SBA) loan program. To him, the challenge of identifying potentially successful businesses would more than offset the losses that would result from those that failed. “We’ve developed some of the most innovative loan packages in the history of the bank, an incredible number of which have turned out to be good,” he said at the time. That mindset helped jumpstart local businesses that today generate substantial regional economic impact, businesses like Great Plains Ventures — a venture capital company whose subsidiary, Great Plains Industries, was established in the early 1970s with money from an SBA loan from INTRUST. "This program has pushed me to take ownership and start making an impact." Trinity Peterson, Treasury and Commercial Banking Specialist at our location in Prairie Village, has wrapped up her journey through the 2026 Shawnee Tomorrow leadership program, facilitated by the Shawnee Chamber of Commerce. The six-month community leadership development program gives participants first-hand access to leaders who play integral roles in the region, offering a behind-the-scenes view of the processes, programs, opportunities, and challenges that impact the city, county, and state. From a guided historic tour of the Kansas Capitol to city council sessions, meetings with local nonprofits, a healthcare leadership panel, and conversations with Johnson County legislators, local mayors, and community leaders, Trinity says each experience has shaped how she thinks about leadership. The people have made an impact, too. "Everyone brings a different background and viewpoint, which makes our discussions thoughtful and energizing," Trinity shares. "It's been inspiring to learn alongside people who care deeply about their work and their community." One of the most meaningful takeaways she's brought back to INTRUST is a deeper understanding of leadership as service. "The program has reminded me that our 'community' includes everyone we interact with — colleagues, customers, everyday people — and that leadership is about elevating the people around you," she says. Trinity and her classmates recently organized a food drive benefiting Shawnee Community Services, and she's continued to seek out volunteer opportunities as a direct result of the program. "I'm excited to continue shifting from learning to doing," she says. "Making an impact in the community is something I'm really passionate about." Congratulations, Trinity!

Prayas Gautam is pursuing his master’s degree in computer science at Kansas State University, with plans to graduate in December 2026. Jack Snook is a recent Wichita State University graduate with a degree in finance. He joined INTRUST as an intern in credit services earlier this year and proved to be the right fit, earning a full-time role as a Credit Analyst. “I searched for an internship to apply my educational knowledge to the real world and gain experience in finance,” Jack says. “I chose INTRUST because of its presence in Wichita and the opportunity to learn about credit and how the banking industry works.” Jack has been part of the team since January, and it didn't take long for his work to speak for itself. “So far, I’ve had a great experience meeting and working with everyone here,” he says. Now in a full-time role, he continues to grow through hands-on experience and learning how teams across the organization work together to serve our customers. Congrats, Jack!
