EXPAND No. 18 explores the idea that design creates communities for all. Kalmia Rose and Cypress View exemplify how designers integrate community needs into the design itself. Before putting pen to paper, our team spoke with longtime residents of Jordan Downs to learn what they need from their neighborhood, and these conversations led to a design driven by safety and connection. Tiered massing and raised amenity decks create overlapping sightlines and degrees of access that let residents take ownership of this space and enjoy it with peace of mind. This site emphasizes active mobility and connectivity, particularly through an open central park, and the building masses provide complementary visibility alongside this access. By understanding the site’s history, its present-day context and the needs of this community, our designers were proud to help revitalize an LA neighborhood as a safe and connected urban village.
