Homeless individuals are often judged as “unfit” or “irresponsible” when it comes to pet ownership. But the lack of stable housing is not a reflection of someone’s capacity to love, care for, or be devoted to an animal. In fact, research shows that people experiencing homelessness often demonstrate remarkably strong bonds with their pets and, in many cases, prioritize their animals’ needs above their own. Today was an incredibly special day at LA Family Housing and our sister organization LAFHBuilds as we prepared our newest permanent supportive housing community, Sherman Way, to welcome 63 residents who will move in this summer. More than 30 volunteers joined us to help transform the studio apartments into warm, move-in-ready homes. They unpacked and organized kitchen items and household essentials, wrote welcome notes, and added thoughtful touches throughout each space. A huge thank you to everyone who volunteered their time and energy to help make Sherman Way feel like home!

This Mother’s Day, we’re honored to share Marcela’s story. 💙 As a mother experiencing homelessness, Marcela faced unimaginable challenges while doing everything she could to protect and care for her son, Alex. Through the support of LA Family Housing, she found safety, stability, healing, and ultimately a place to call home for her family. Today, Marcela is thriving, raising her son in a safe home, pursuing college, and building the future she once thought was out of reach. Her journey is a powerful reminder of the strength of mothers and the impact that compassionate support can have on a family’s future. April is Volunteer Appreciation month, and LA Family Housing is celebrating and appreciating the thousands of volunteers who help make our work possible every year. Volunteers like Yanira Giron and Mark Chandler, who have decades of experience between the two of them, and have spent the last few years providing financial literacy and education to low-income families and individuals across Los Angeles through Bank of America. “I found my purpose through Bank of America in volunteering. And I found my volunteering purpose in LA Family Housing, which is to serve the unhoused community,” says Yanira. “That to me is what a perfect match is.
