AIR QUALITY SAFETY ADVISORY FOR TOLEDO AND LUCAS COUNTY Smoke from Canadian wildfires continues to affect air quality across portions of the United States, including our region. The Toledo-Lucas County Health Department issued an air-quality advisory after conditions reached the hazardous category on July 16, 2026, and stated that the advisory will remain in effect until conditions improve. Lucas Metropolitan Housing encourages our residents, employees and neighbors throughout the City of Toledo to take this advisory seriously and reduce their exposure to smoke. Please take the following precautions: • Remain indoors whenever possible. • Keep windows and doors closed. • Avoid outdoor exercise and strenuous physical activity. • Set central air-conditioning systems to recirculate indoor air. • Use a portable air cleaner or high-efficiency filter when available. • Wear a properly fitted, NIOSH-approved respirator, such as an N95, when outdoor activity cannot be avoided. • Pay close attention to children, older adults, pregnant individuals and people with asthma, COPD, heart disease, diabetes or other chronic health conditions. • Seek medical assistance for new or worsening breathing problems or other concerning symptoms. The Toledo-Lucas County Health Department’s guidance is direct: “Everyone: Avoid all physical activity outdoors.” The department also advises sensitive populations to remain indoors and keep activity levels low. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states: “Staying inside is best.” The CDC also recommends wearing a tightly fitted, NIOSH-approved respirator when going outdoors is necessary. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency advises residents to “keep windows and doors closed” and use air-conditioning, portable air cleaners or high-efficiency filters to reduce indoor smoke exposure. Air-quality conditions can change quickly. Residents should continue monitoring updates from the Toledo-Lucas County Health Department, Ohio EPA and AirNow. Please protect yourself, check on vulnerable family members and neighbors, and limit unnecessary outdoor activity. Strong communities look out for one another, especially when the air outside becomes a threat we cannot see. July 15 in Toledo History: Lessons in Leadership, Health and Community TOLEDO, Ohio - July 15 marks two significant moments in Toledo’s history, both shaped by conflict, crisis and the need for strong community leadership. On July 15, 1835, tensions surrounding the Toledo War reached a dangerous point when Monroe County Deputy Sheriff Joseph Wood was injured while attempting to enforce Michigan territorial law. The incident is widely recognized as the only documented injury connected to the boundary dispute between Ohio and the Michigan Territory. Fourteen years later, Toledo faced a very different kind of crisis. On July 15, 1849, a major cholera outbreak began spreading through the city. More than 100 people reportedly lost their lives in the weeks that followed. The epidemic exposed serious concerns involving sanitation, housing conditions and public health and ultimately helped lead to the creation of Toledo’s first Board of Health. Although these events took place nearly two centuries ago, the lessons still matter today. Strong communities depend on leaders and organizations that are prepared to respond when people face uncertainty. They also depend on safe living conditions, clear communication and systems that protect the health and well-being of residents. At Lucas Metropolitan Housing, that responsibility extends far beyond providing a place to live. It includes maintaining safe homes, responding to resident concerns, connecting individuals and families with resources and building partnerships that help strengthen neighborhoods. 🎥 Voices of Collingwood Green Episode One: Ms. Nickson - The Open Door Housing is about more than buildings. Communities are shaped by the people who live in them, the relationships they build, and the experiences they share. For 12 years, Ms. Nickson has called Collingwood Green home. Her journey began during a season of transition. After the passing of her mother and the difficult decision to sell her home, Ms. Nickson found herself beginning a new chapter. Collingwood Green was not originally part of her plan, but what began as an unexpected move became home. Over the years, Ms. Nickson has played an active role in her community. For five years, she served as a resident liaison, helping connect residents with management and doing what has always come naturally to her, working with people and bringing them together. She remembers a community filled with popcorn nights, chicken dinners, Halloween celebrations, and her own Fish Fridays for some of the older gentlemen in the building. Today, that spirit of hospitality continues through her family’s Sunday dinners, where neighbors and friends have found a seat at the table. Her philosophy is simple: “We just love people.” Ms. Nickson’s story reminds us that creating strong communities requires more than physical investment. It also requires connection, participation, pride, service, and people willing to make room for one another. For Ms. Nickson, The Open Door is more than the title of her story.
