Historical figures can sometimes feel flattened into names, dates, and famous quotes. In the latest post of our America at 250 series, BFW Publishers authors Jason Stacy, co-author of Fabric of a Nation, and Rachel Williams-Giordano, co-author of Freedom on My Mind, share ways instructors can help students see the real people behind familiar names. Primary sources let students encounter the evidence people left behind, from speeches and newspapers to diaries and even doodles. Classroom exercises can take that a step further by asking students to wrestle with the situations historical figures faced, then compare their choices to the historical record. “It's not the death of truth, it's the death of nuance.” That’s how Newsreel Founder Jack Brewster described one of the biggest challenges facing science communication today. Before students ever step into a classroom, science finds them in their feeds, headlines, AI-generated summaries, TikTok explainers, and Reddit threads. Some of it is accurate. Some of it is incomplete. Some of it is missing the context students need to understand what they’re seeing.
