Automotive paint shops are among the most energy-intensive operations in a plant, and consolidating several of them raises the stakes further. Dürr is building a turnkey paint shop for Volkswagen Autoeuropa in Palmela, Portugal, a factory that produced 236,100 vehicles in 2024. The project pairs energy-efficient coating and drying technology with a software architecture that unifies three separate paint shops under a single SCADA environment. The integration challenge is real: migrating third-party software and upgrading an outdated system into one interface across buildings with different technological baselines. Over the past month, five aerospace programs reported concrete hydrogen propulsion milestones: Airbus and MTU Aero Engines announced a planned joint venture for a hydrogen fuel cell engine, expected to begin operations in 2027. GE Aerospace and Avio Aero completed the first hydrogen engine relight test in simulated altitude conditions. Embraer began fuel cell rig testing in San Diego. Intelligent Energy advanced its IE-Flight 300 platform through a £17 million U.K.-backed program. ZeroAvia announced a collaboration with Marshall Aerospace to explore hydrogen-electric capability for military platforms. Why these programs matter: They're moving beyond concept and into hardware testing, rig validation and formal joint venture structuring — stages that pull composite hydrogen storage, power electronics, thermal management and fuel system suppliers into active development cycles. What to watch (in our opinion): Whether the Airbus-MTU joint venture receives regulatory approval and begins operations on its stated 2027 timeline, which will be the most visible near-term proof point for commercial hydrogen propulsion industrialization. Composite battery enclosures have proven their potential in passenger cars. Scaling them to trucks and buses is a different beast. Commercial vehicles produce far lower volumes per model than passenger cars, while requirements shift with application, duty cycle and vehicle architecture. That economics gap is the focus of AZL Aachen GmbH's new Joint Partner Project, which examines how plastic-based battery casings and enclosures can become viable for trucks, buses and off-highway vehicles even at modest volumes. The project centers on three modularization strategies: capacity scaling through standardized enclosure units, in-mold variants using adapted materials or exchangeable mold elements, and cross-model combination of standardized casing variants. Together they aim to bundle volumes beyond a single model and make highly automated composite processes economically justifiable. Plastic-based designs also open the door to functional integration, folding connectors, mounting elements, sealing surfaces and thermal management into fewer parts. Planned deliverables include CAE-validated reference concepts, a regulatory compliance map and an industrialization roadmap. The 10-month project kicks off in Q3 2026. The Precision Machining Index climbed to 55.7 in June, extending its expansion to six straight months. Six consecutive months above 50 marks a meaningful run for precision machining after the index sat below the expansion threshold for much of late 2025. But, new orders and production both cooled from their spring peaks, suggesting the market is settling rather than losing momentum. In custom marine work, a single last-minute design change can quietly erase a job's profit. Willis Custom Yachts builds sportfishing boats from 18 to 77 feet, each with tens of thousands of largely non-repeating components machined to tolerances near 0.008 inch. As its in-house CNC department grew, fine details were being lost between its CAD and CAM systems, driving tolerance stack-up, added inspection and rework. The shop adopted associative CAD/CAM, which propagates design changes directly from the model into the machining program and flags operations that no longer match the updated geometry. Parametric modeling handles the compound curves and blended surfaces that define hull work, while digital twins of the machines allow accurate simulation and confident lights-out running. The results reported over 18 months: productivity up more than 500 percent, scrap down over 95 percent, programming time halved on some parts and delivery times cut in half. Machine shops have more software options than ever, yet many teams use only a fraction of a package and then hit a missing feature. That gap often leads to fragile workarounds. SendCutSend took a different path. The rapid manufacturing provider started with a single laser cutter and a homegrown quoting tool, then kept building. Today its in-house software spans more than a million lines of code and handles the work of ERP, MES and CRM systems, adapting as the business grows. Founder Jim Belosic argues that developing software in house lets a shop match programs to its own processes and change them on short notice, rather than bending operations to fit off-the-shelf tools. He notes that talented developers are easier to hire than in the past and that AI makes them more productive, though he cautions against relying on AI coding tools alone.
