    A series of Mayo Clinic studies published across Nature journals is advancing the science of healthy aging by deepening researchers' understanding of senescent, or "zombie," cells. The studies: • Introduce new tools to identify senescent cells across tissues. • Reveal mechanisms that drive chronic inflammation associated with aging. • Explore therapeutic strategies to reduce the harmful effects of senescent cells in preclinical models. • Identify a potential blood biomarker that could help assess biological aging in future research. Together, these findings move the field beyond recognizing that senescent cells contribute to aging toward understanding which cells matter most, how they drive disease and how they may be targeted more precisely. The research also supports Mayo Clinic's Precure Research initiative, which aims to predict and intercept biological processes before they develop into disease.     New research identifies a mitochondrial mechanism that may help reduce chronic inflammation during aging. A team of researchers has discovered a previously unknown metabolic-epigenetic pathway that enables senescent cells to produce the inflammatory molecules linked to aging and age-related disease. Building on earlier work showing that mitochondrial DNA and RNA activate immune signaling, the researchers found that mitochondria also generate the metabolic building blocks needed to turn inflammatory genes on through epigenetic regulation. The findings point to an alternative therapeutic strategy. Rather than eliminating senescent cells, researchers are exploring ways to selectively suppress the harmful inflammatory signals these cells produce while preserving their beneficial functions in tissue repair and tumor suppression. This work advances our understanding of the biological mechanisms underlying aging and identifies a promising target for future therapies aimed at improving healthspan.   • A Mayo Clinic-led international phase 3 study found that a new immunotherapy helped many patients with an aggressive form of bladder cancer keep their bladder instead of having it surgically removed. The treatment also kept many patients cancer-free for more than two years and caused mostly mild side effects. The findings were published in The Lancet Oncology.
