CEO of Manistique-based IQ Designs, Inc. Rob Giles and his team manufacture specialized equipment, including petri dish and test tube filling systems, found in laboratories in over 30 countries. Through the MEDC’s International Trade team, IQ Designs used STEP grants to make the connections needed to secure global contracts. To date, the UP company is generating an ROI of $90 per $1 received, proving once again that Michigan makes it possible to have a highly successful international company, even in the comfort of a small town.

We supported the Unified Civic Monuments Project through our Public Spaces Community Places program to help locals bring their vision of community connection to life. Thanks to this collaboration, two monuments now stand along the Unity Trail, celebrating the historic legacies of Benton Harbor and St. Joseph while creating a shared destination for people to connect.

The math proves it. Strategic, accountable investment pays off for Michigan communities.
Let's set the record straight on how #TeamMichigan actually wins the battle for global investments. Other states and nations are aggressively competing, so we have to stay on top of our game. The difference is in our approach: we require companies to hit specific, verified milestones before they receive funding. By doing so, we protect our taxpayers. When we back the people who want to build a prosperous future for our state, we see proof that these efforts pay off. Recent data from the W.E. Upjohn Institute for Employment Research shows our battery facility investments are on track to return $880M in profit back to local communities. Incentives often help land a new project, and in some cases, the project grows beyond initial plans. Look at Corning Incorporated in Saginaw County. They started with a $900M commitment, but because we built an environment where businesses can successfully expand, they grew it to $1.5B, creating thousands of jobs for Michigan families. Team Michigan, especially my teammates at the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, is working constantly to enhance Michigan's competitive environment to present a compelling case for risk-taking, innovative companies of all sizes to select Michigan and feel continually affirmed in the wisdom of their choice of Michigan.
