We’re building houses. The first one is already built and standing in Healdsburg. These are real photos, not renderings! Our first product was an ADU, but our goal was never to be an ADU company. We set out to build exceptional homes regardless of size. Locale is our take on a larger scale: small clusters of single-family homes, in the California neighborhoods people love, priced more like the starter homes America stopped building. Nate Berg at Fast Company spoke with our CEO, Mike McNamara, about what we’re building and why. Check it out, link below in the comments.

A multi-format housing company designing, building, and delivering homes across California.
About us
Samara puts better homes within reach of more people. We design, build, and deliver homes across California, controlling the entire process in our own factory. That means thoughtful design, premium materials, and precision engineering in ways conventional builders can’t match, with fewer delays and more predictable timelines. Our homes include ADUs, single-family homes, and multifamily infill, creating better places to live for homeowners, homebuyers, and operators. Founded in 2016 as a research and innovation team within Airbnb, Samara is now an independent company backed by Airbnb, Thrive Capital, 8VC, and other leading investors, and is based in Redwood City, CA.

Last week in Altadena, we installed a home for Rosalina. She lost her home in the 2025 Los Angeles wildfires. Her insurance had been canceled months before the fire, leaving her without a clear path to rebuild when everything was lost. Through our partnership with Steadfast LA, Samara built and installed a new home for Rosalina at no profit and at no cost to her. From permit approval to installation took 34 days. This work reflects months of effort across design, engineering, manufacturing, construction, and coordination with our partners. This installation is the first of several we will complete this year. Our focus is on supporting underinsured homeowners who want to return to their properties and rebuild their communities. Rebuilding after a disaster is a deeply personal decision. We stepped up by doing what we know how to do—designing and building homes—to support that decision. We know the real work belongs to the people who choose to come back and start again. Welcome home, Rosalina.

Over 50 Samara ADUs will soon land in existing multifamily communities owned by Prometheus Real Estate Group. With SB 1211 in place, adding new homes on underused land is easier than ever for owners and operators who want to grow supply without the cost and complexity of ground-up development. ADUs on multifamily sites continue to stand out for their efficiency: low friction to approve and install, strong economics, and meaningful upside in net operating income and asset value. This first phase spans five Prometheus properties, with homes built in our factory and installed with minimal site disruption. Samara CEO Mike McNamara spoke with HousingWire about the opportunity. Today: We’ve raised $34M in Series B to scale up. $100M+ in booked projects over the past year. Two factories running. We’ve launched projects in 45 cities across California, serving homeowners and multifamily operators alike, and partnered with Steadfast LA to donate units to wildfire survivors in Los Angeles. Axios’ Dan Primack called it a BFD in his Pro Rata newsletter. Read the details here: https://lnkd.in/d5_2R-dH
