As a trusted subcontractor for the U.S. Navy’s Naval Shipyard Infrastructure Optimization Program (SIOP), Michael Baker International helped shape the future of four historic shipyards: Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility (Hawaii), Portsmouth Naval Shipyard (Maine), Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility (Washington), and Norfolk Naval Shipyard (Virginia). Michael Baker played a pivotal role in developing a comprehensive scope of work and rough order of magnitude for a transformative adaptive reuse proposal tailored to the unique needs of each site. Our team conducted detailed studies of the shipyards’ historic facilities, evaluating each structure, identifying perceived barriers, and recommending innovative adaptive reuse strategies and alternative solutions. MD Anderson’s new Sugar Land Hospital represents a major expansion of cancer care services for Fort Bend County, Texas, and the greater Houston region. Anticipated to open in 2029, the five-story, 470,000-square-foot facility will become MD Anderson’s largest Houston-area location to date, broadening access to advanced oncology care and expanded clinical services. Michael Baker International is supporting this transformative healthcare project by providing mechanical, electrical, plumbing (MEP), technology, and acoustic engineering services. The new facility will include an ambulatory surgery center, expanded diagnostic imaging, radiation oncology, outpatient procedural services, and multidisciplinary clinic space designed to support seamless, comprehensive care for adult patients with cancer diagnoses and low-to-medium acuity needs. Our work will help ensure the hospital’s systems are high-performing, resilient, and aligned with the demands of a modern cancer-care environment.
