If you have been with the same company for five, eight, or ten-plus years and are starting to think about what comes next, the job market you are walking back into looks almost nothing like the one you left, and the instincts that served you well last time around may be exactly what holds you back this time. The resume format that worked a decade ago gets filtered out by applicant tracking systems before a hiring manager ever sees it. LinkedIn has become the first interview, and most recruiters have already formed an opinion about you before they ever pick up the phone. More than 70 percent of jobs at the senior level are filled through relationships and recruiting firms rather than job boards, which means the professionals who know how to navigate that side of the market have a significant advantage over the ones who are applying cold and waiting. The good news is that mid-career professionals are far more marketable than they tend to give themselves credit for, and a search that is structured correctly from the start moves considerably faster than one built on outdated assumptions about how hiring actually works. We put together a complete playbook covering resume strategy, LinkedIn, networking, working with a recruiter, interview preparation, and the salary conversation, specifically for professionals who have not been through this process in years. Drop a comment if this resonates or if there is a specific part of the search you are finding most challenging right now. You spent weeks finding the right person, moved them through your process, got alignment from everyone on the team, and were preparing to extend an offer when your recruiter called with news you did not want to hear: another company already beat you to it. This is one of the most winnable situations in hiring and also one of the most consistently mishandled ones, and after 30 years of navigating competing offer situations across engineering, manufacturing, finance, supply chain, legal, HR, sales, and IT, we have a very clear picture of what separates the companies that close the hire from the ones that restart the search. The instinct is to panic, pressure the candidate, or throw money at the problem, and none of those approaches work. What does work is moving faster than feels comfortable, making the conversation personal rather than transactional, and knowing the difference between a candidate who genuinely wants your role and one who is using your offer as leverage to get a raise somewhere else, because those are two completely different situations that require two completely different responses. We wrote down exactly what to do, what not to do, and when to walk away entirely. Hiring managers and HR leaders, we want to hear from you in the comments. Have you ever won a candidate back after a competing offer showed up, and what made the difference? Most hiring managers treat August like a dead zone, but that assumption is costing companies their best Q4 candidates. Here is what is actually happening right now: passive candidates, who make up more than 70 percent of the workforce, are more open to a conversation in August than almost any other month. The companies that win Q4 talent almost always start in August, and we have been doing this for more than 30 years. Mechanical engineer, electrical engineer, industrial engineer. Three titles that appear in engineering job postings constantly and three roles that could not be more different. If your company is hiring an engineer and you are not sure which discipline you actually need, it is one of the most common and costly mistakes we see. Post the wrong role, get flooded with mismatched applicants, and end up running the same search twice. We broke down the difference here: https://lnkd.in/eAXfDH7S #EngineeringJobs #EngineeringRecruitment #ManufacturingJobs #HiringEngineers #Hiring

The controller is one of the most critical finance roles in any organization and is also one of the hardest to fill. Fewer than 700,000 people hold an active CPA license in the US. Factor in how many are in public accounting, retired, or not looking, and the pool gets very small very fast. We broke down what a controller actually does, why the search is harder than most CFOs expect, and what companies consistently get wrong before the search even starts. You ran them through the full process, they interviewed well, and then they took a counteroffer from their current employer. It happens more than most hiring managers want to admit and the signals were there before the offer stage. Movement's headhunters have been qualifying candidates for 30 years. Here is what separates a genuinely interested candidate from one who is just using your process for leverage. How long does a recruiting search actually take? The honest answer depends on more than the market. It depends on how aligned your team is, how fast you give feedback, and whether your comp is competitive before the search starts — not after you lose the candidate. Movement's headhunters break down what actually controls your hiring timeline and what you can do about it before the search begins. Q3 just started, and if you haven't looked at your headcount yet, now is the time. The companies that finish Q4 in the strongest position are the ones that identified their staffing gaps in July — not October when it's too late to do anything about it. We broke down exactly how to do a mid-year staffing check-in and what to do if you find a gap. The best executive candidates aren't on job boards. They're already employed, performing well, and not looking. So how do you reach them? That's exactly what executive search is built to do. We broke down the full process — how it works, what it costs, and how to know if it's the right move for your organization.
