Throwback Thursday: taking another look at one of the most striking sights in MSU Engineering research... living, beating “mini hearts” grown in a lab. Aitor Aguirre, associate professor of biomedical engineering at Michigan State University, is developing heart organoids that model human heart biology in ways traditional animal models cannot. The tiny, three-dimensional tissues are grown from human stem cells and can help researchers study how heart cells contract, how electrical signals move and how tissue responds to stress, inflammation and potential therapies. Students shared their work at the 2026 Mid-Michigan Symposium for Undergraduate Research Experiences, known as MidSURE, bringing research posters, conversations and discovery to the STEM Teaching and Learning Facility. At 103, Ceo Bauer is still part of the Spartan Engineering story. Bauer, a 1949 civil engineering graduate, is one of Michigan State University’s oldest living alumni. He spent his career contributing to major road projects in the Upper Peninsula and may be the Michigan Department of Transportation’s oldest living retiree. Materials that are tough are not always transparent. Materials that are transparent are not always strong. Xinyue Liu is working to change that. Liu, an assistant professor in MSU’s Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science, has received a $666,729 NSF CAREER Award to study polypeptide hydrogels, soft biomaterials that can be designed to combine mechanical toughness with optical transparency. Her research could help advance next-generation biomaterials for bioimaging, tissue regeneration and personalized diagnostics.
