Fleets with fewer than 26 trucks spend about 20% more per mile on fuel than fleets with more than 1,000 trucks. Is that fair? We don’t think so. But here’s why it happens: 1. Small fleets typically only get access to retail pricing which is more expensive than the bulk pricing large fleets benefit from 2. Large fleets can negotiate pricing programs based on volume and small fleets usually can’t 3. The average small fleet doesn’t have many tools for fuel management, so they’ll typically see more theft, misuse, and spend leakage over time. Here’s what you can do about it: 1. Calculate your true fuel cost per mile (CPM) weekly. 2. Compare your CPM to these typical benchmarks (but take them with a grain of salt given how volatile fuel prices are right now): 🟢Good: ≤ $0.55/mi 🟡Typical: $0.56–$0.60/mi 🔴Flag: > $0.60/mi What matters most is how your CPM trends over time. Set your baseline and watch for spikes. 3. If your CPM is consistently high, keep an eye out for: - Poor fuel card pricing - Excessive out-of-route fueling - Idle time getting out of control - Fuel theft or misuse At Mudflap, our mission is to help small trucking operations save money.
