Behind the scenes of research 2: Stuck on a Paper? Take It for a Walk You have a good idea, but the paper is stuck. The results don’t feel right, or you’re not fully confident in the analysis. It happens to all of us. One of the best pieces of advice I received early in my career was simple: take your research out for a walk. Share it, present it, talk about it. Bring it to conferences, listen to how others react, and look for connections. You can trust this, studies show that socializing ideas through feedback, interaction, and academic exchange improves both the quality of the work (e.g. Hauss, 2020 - https://lnkd.in/eT8_6bDT) We look forward to seeing your work at MWAOM 2026. Getting back into research starts with showing up again, even in a small way. We look forward to seeing your work at MWAOM 2026. Call for proposals: https://lnkd.in/eB5wmgTp
I sometimes talk to colleagues who have not submitted to a conference in a while. Life happens. Teaching grows, admin takes space, other priorities come in. Research slowly moves to the background. Then at some point, the question comes back. Where do I even start again? My suggestion is quite simple. Do not wait for the “big paper.” Start with something small that you care about. A question that has been sitting with you. A dataset you never fully explored. An idea from class that keeps coming back. Put it into a short, focused paper and send it to a conference. The first submission after a gap is less about contribution and more about momentum. You are getting back into the rhythm of writing, positioning, and engaging with feedback. Conferences are a very good place for that. They give you a deadline, a conversation, and a reason to show up again. Sometimes the hardest part is just to re-enter the room. Once you do, things start moving again. :) NKU Haile College of Business Midwest Academy of Management Midwest Decision Science Institute (MWDSI) FGV EAESP

Behind the scenes of research: clarity is your first decision Before methods, theory, or results, readers and reviewers look for one thing: Does this paper have a clear point? In many submissions, the core argument only becomes visible after several pages. By then, the paper has already lost momentum. A strong paper signals its contribution early. The reader understands what is being studied, why it matters, and what is at stake within the first page. As you prepare your submission, treat clarity as a strategic choice. Make your central idea explicit and your contribution easy to recognize. TIP: it is worth taking a look in Grant & Pollock (2011) Publishing in AMJ -Part 3: Setting the Hook (https://lnkd.in/eunEXwyv), and learning how strong papers establish a clear “hook” right at the start, giving the reader a reason to engage from the very first paragraph. We look forward to seeing your work at MWAOM 2026. Call for proposals: https://lnkd.in/eB5wmgTp
