Natrx | Adaptive Infrastructure

For twenty years, the Lake Norman Wildlife chapter has been building fish habitat across the lake, reef by reef. This summer, with grant funding from Duke Energy Corporation's Habitat Enhancement Program, they took that work somewhere new: the first freshwater deployment of the Natrx FishHouse. The 48 modules now installed off two public piers on Lake Norman are FishHouse ExoForms, engineered with the voids, ledges, and rough surface marine life loves. Fish see that complexity the way they read a rock shelf or a fallen tree. Juveniles tuck into the small gaps, adults hold in the bigger ones, and the algae and biofilm that feed everything else colonize the surface. The structure holds its shape and surface area over time, so the habitat value keeps compounding. By concentrating the FishHouse at the State Park pier and Beatty's Ford Access, the chapter put it within reach of every angler on the lake, waterfront or not. Yesterday they put 48 FishHouse reef modules in the water at two public sites on Lake Norman, the State Park pier and Beatty's Ford Access. First ExoForm units are in the water at Port Lavaca! The Texas City of Port Lavaca living shoreline is moving from the yard to the bay. Our Natrx ExoForm reef modules are engineered to reduce wave energy along the shoreline while creating habitat that oysters, fish, and marine life actually use. It's the kind of project that protects a working coast and improves it at the same time. Proud of the crew on the water today and the partners who got us here. A storm pushed our schedule back this week. Fitting, honestly — because sometimes the storm is the whole point. I've spent 12+ years in commercial insurance helping coastal Louisiana manage risk. Marine, offshore, specialty lines. And here's what that work taught me: the best risk management isn't a policy you file away. It's infrastructure you build before you need it. Next week, weather permitting, Coastal Conservation Association Louisiana, Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries and ConocoPhillips (with the help of some great partners) will complete the installation of a new artificial reef at Pelto Island — the site of the historic Lake Pelto sulphur mine in Terrebonne Parish, a place I grew up fishing out of Cocodrie. Yesterday in Lake Charles, CCA Louisiana, CITGO, and the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries announced the construction of two new nearshore artificial reefs — the Port Wonder Reef in Calcasieu Parish and the Cutoff Point Reef along the Louisiana coast — both being built simultaneously through CCA Louisiana's REEF Louisiana program. Louisiana has lost more natural reef habitat than any other Gulf state. Rebuilding that structure is essential to the long-term health of our saltwater fishery, and it isn't possible without committed partners across the public, private, and nonprofit sectors.
