Introducing NerdWallet's Financial Resilience Index: a new monthly measure that answers the question everyone's asking right now — are Americans financially prepared? NerdWallet’s Senior Economist, Elizabeth Renter breaks it down. 👇
I'm very excited to launch NerdWallet's new Financial Resilience Index, a monthly measure of household economic fortitude. It consists of equally weighted, nationally representative survey questions across three measures: financial security (how people feel about their finances), financial strength (their current financial capacity) and economic outlook (how they're feeling about the economy around them). One key differentiator in the FRI from other closely watched releases is that it measures current financial capacity rather than just sentiment. We will know each month how insulated households are from potential economic disruption. Some of the findings from our inaugural launch: 🟢 60.4: May 2026 Financial Resilience - On a 100 pt scale where 0 represents no resilience and 100, perfect resilience, this month's FRI indicates consumers have plenty of growth opportunity. 🟢 74% of Americans feel in control of their day-to-day finances. 🟢 76% of Americans are confident in their ability to pay all of their bills on time this month. 🟢 37% of Americans will have to rely on credit to manage at least some of their expenses this month. 🟢 63% of Americans have enough cash on hand to cover an unexpected $1,000 expense, should one arise this month. 🟢 66% of Americans believe the U.S. economy will enter a recession in the next 12 months. Unsurprisingly, high income Americans and older generations are more financially resilient, as measured by this composite, but there were some interesting demographic differences across parents and non-parents. I look forward to watching how these measures change over the months. Big thanks to our long-time partners at The Harris Poll for helping bring this idea to fruition.
