Distributed solar and storage are key tools to securing energy reliability and affordability in New York City. A new report by New York City Comptroller Mark Levine underscores the importance of distributed solar and storage in the City. In the report, the Comptroller calls on the City to adopt a comprehensive distributed energy strategy– developing on city-owned assets in a coordinated portfolio to attract institutional investment, reduce costs through economies of scale, and accelerate deployment. Further, the report backs NYSEIA’s City Council legislation that would finally unlock safe residential and medium-scale batteries in the City. This report states the facts clearly– distributed solar + storage lowers costs for ratepayers, supports a strong clean energy workforce, and promotes investment in the City. New York City must remove barriers to deployment, streamline permitting and interconnection, and pass clean energy legislation to unlock its clean energy potential. However, as power demand rises and New York’s energy infrastructure ages, building out 21st century energy infrastructure will be critical to relieving upward pressure on prices and overcoming supply constraints. Join NYSEIA and the Buffalo Niagara Manufacturing Alliance for the Western NY Energy Symposium, an event focused on strategies to meet the region’s growing demand for affordable clean power, including the role of distributed solar and energy storage. This program will include opening remarks and industry briefings followed by a panel discussion about regional economic development, energy supply, New York’s progress deploying distributed solar and energy storage, and opportunities to rapidly and cost-effectively add more capacity.
