  • We’re proud to support the ongoing work between Boston Medical Center (BMC) and Takeda as they tackle one of healthcare’s most complex challenges—reducing waste and emissions across the care delivery ecosystem. The release of their first-year report marks an important milestone, not just in progress made, but in what’s possible when institutions come together with intention and urgency. Excited to see how this collaboration continues to evolve and drive scalable impact across the healthcare sector. Link to the report - https://lnkd.in/eDVtAgqS

Did you know that Boston Medical Center is leading the way in reducing greenhouse gas emissions in healthcare? Working with Takeda as part of a three-year collaboration, BMC spent the past year understanding waste produced in two of our pharmacies and an infusion center. A how-to guide was created to help other healthcare institutions conduct their own waste audits and take effective action to reduce emissions and costs. • 🚩Too many health systems are pushed toward new, expensive buildouts that photograph well, but don’t solve the operational challenges underneath. With median non-profit hospital operating margins at just 1.1%, most health systems can’t afford square footage that isn’t pulling its weight. This is the ‘real’ real estate problem in healthcare: oversized footprints, underperforming leases, and land tied up in ways that don’t advance the mission. This is where Oakwell steps in as the Owner’s Engineer. We prevent unnecessary buildouts before they happen — and make the real estate you already own work smarter. We call this Real Estate Optimization, delivered through: • Portfolio analysis & repositioning • Lease enhancement strategies • Facilities condition assessments • Asset purchase & disposition execution The result? Lower overhead, more efficient operations, and capital you can redirect to patient care and mission-aligned priorities—instead of concrete. Because photogenic buildings don’t cure patients. Efficient, high-quality care does. #RealEstateEfficiency #HealthcareInfrastructure #OwnersEngineer #CapitalPlanning #HospitalOperations

  • ‘Energy efficiency = A sound financial strategy’ That’s the resounding lesson from the Essential Hospitals Decarbonization and Resilience Cohort! Oakwell partnered with Health Care Without Harm and America's Essential Hospitals to launch this cohort – designed to help essential hospitals significantly reduce costs. By developing actionable implementation roadmaps for this cohort, Oakwell turned sustainability and efficiency ambitions into practical high-ROI solutions — freeing up millions for hospitals to reinvest into patient care and their mission. The first three hospitals in the cohort are already identifying potential long-term financial savings: ✅ $30M in lifecycle savings → Grady Health identified the opportunity to replace its offsite steam plant with an onsite system. ✅ Efficiency upgrades to offset 10–15% higher electricity costs → Jackson South Health System is eyeing upgrades that will cut emissions and protect against rising prices. ✅ High-ROI lifecycle savings → Henry Ford Wyandotte is considering replacing aging heating units with water-sourced heat pumps. These results are just the beginning of what’s possible when sound financial stewardship meets sustainability ambitions. 👉 Stay tuned for a deeper dive into Oakwell’s role and impact! #HealthcareLeadership #InfrastructureEfficiency #Decarbonization #HealthcareSustainability #Engineering

Despite changes to the federal funding landscape, 3 essential hospitals are finding creative solutions to drive ambitious sustainability projects. Through strategic energy investments like theirs, hospitals in the Practice Greenhealth network nationwide saved $154M in 2023-2024 – money that can be directly reinvested in community care. Through a cohort funded by the Wells Fargo Foundation and The Commonwealth Fund: 🔹Grady Memorial Hospital identified the opportunity to replace its offsite steam plant with an onsite system that would save $30M over 40 years. 🔹Henry Ford Wyandotte is considering replacing indoor heating units past their useful life with heat pumps powered by water from the Detroit River. 🔹Jackson South is discovering energy efficiency updates that can help save money ahead of expected 10-15 % increases in electricity prices next year. The lesson? Energy efficiency isn't just environmental responsibility – it's a financial strategy that keeps doors open.
