What does it take to make AI a truly native part of the RAN? In a new blog OCUCU EF member, DeepSig, Inc., explores how the OCUDU community is building an open platform where AI applications can run directly within the radio—not through proprietary integrations, but through shared, vendor-neutral interfaces. The post highlights: - The CUDA-accelerated OCUDU L1, now available in the open repositories - The forthcoming dApp/E3 framework for inline, real-time and observational AI applications - Open interfaces designed to support portable, interoperable AI-RAN solutions - Collaboration across the OCUDU Hardware Acceleration and AI-RAN Working Groups DeepSig is also bringing solutions including OmniPHY, OmniSIG and Axon onto these common interfaces, while contributing open reference designs that can help the broader ecosystem build, test and deploy AI-native RAN applications. This is the promise of OCUDU: creating an open, neutrally governed venue where organizations can collaborate on the infrastructure needed to move AI-RAN innovation from research to real-world deployment. How can the industry validate Open RAN security capabilities under real-world conditions? Associate member POWDER Wireless and Rimedo Labs are collaborating to integrate and test Rimedo Labs’ Jamming Detection xApp with OCUDU RAN software in POWDER’s city-scale, over-the-air wireless testbed. The work will evaluate jamming detection and mitigation capabilities across real terrain and interference conditions, helping demonstrate how open, community-developed CU/DU software can support more secure and resilient networks. This collaboration is part of a broader OCUDU Ecosystem Foundation initiative bringing together industry and academia to test OCUDU across diverse use cases and operating environments, and turn wireless innovation into production-ready deployments. POWDER Wireless, a National Science Foundation (NSF) PAWR platform operated by the University of Utah, and Rimedo Labs, a wireless R&D and consulting firm specializing in RAN automation algorithms targeting O-RAN, 5G, and 6G systems, have embarked on a collaboration to integrate and test jamming detection and mitigation capabilities on the OCUDU RAN software in an OTA deployment. The work pairs Rimedo Labs' existing Jamming Detection xApp (JD-xApp) with POWDER’s city-scale, software-defined radio testbed to validate RAN security capabilities under real-world OTA RF conditions. The collaboration targets the OCUDU RAN software. This effort is part of a larger initiative to test and evaluate OCUDU across a range of use cases and network operating conditions, coordinated by the OCUDU Ecosystem Foundation among organizations spanning industry and academia. The OCUDU Ecosystem Foundation is a collaborative program hosted by The Linux Foundation dedicated to accelerating open, secure, and interoperable Open Source RAN CU/DU implementations. It supports the industry with reference architectures, conformance tooling, deployment playbooks, and community CI and interoperability labs that help translate innovation into production-ready deployments. POWDER is an end-to-end platform for mobile wireless research, offering a variety of radio resources, including COTS O-RUs deployed in a real-world OTA environment, a user-configurable network, and access to compute, storage, and cloud resources. Researchers can use it to build wireless networks on existing technologies, emerging ones (6G, massive MIMO), or entirely new designs. "We built POWDER as a city-scale living laboratory precisely so that work like this wouldn't have to stay in the lab,” said Prof. Kobus van der Merwe of POWDER. “Testing OCUDU's performance for jamming resilience over the air, across real terrain and real interference, gives the community evidence they can't get any other way." Rimedo Labs specializes in providing high-quality consulting, implementation, and R&D services for modern wireless systems and their AI/ML-based automation. They bring several years of applied research into RIC-based security, including the JD-xApp. It is designed to identify radio jamming attacks by monitoring HARQ statistics and actively mitigating interference by adjusting scheduling parameters. Its capabilities have been previously demonstrated using an Amarisoft-based gNB in the lab. “We’ve already shown that near-real-time jamming detection and mitigation work over the air on an O-RAN-compliant stack,” said Dr Marcin Hoffmann of Rimedo. “The next step is proving the same approach against an open, community-developed CU/DU like OCUDU, in a testbed built for exactly this kind of large-scale, real-world experimentation.” The results of the work will be publicly disseminated with details as the team progresses through its plans in the weeks ahead.
