The U.S. Army Corps’ Nationwide Permit (NWP) 12 authorizes oil and gas pipeline construction through waterways before projects are even proposed. NWP 12 violates the Clean Water Act, Endangered Species Act, National Environmental Policy Act, and Administrative Procedure Act. Developers plan to use NWP 12 to construct pipelines through 2,200 waterbodies and mow down trees and vegetation across 11,000 acres – about 90,000 basketball courts – including across three counties in the upper Ogeechee watershed. 🌾 A regional partnership spanning NC, SC, GA, and FL released targeted plans for each state this month to conserve coastal salt marshes—grassy wetlands that fill with saltwater and drain as the tides ebb and flow. These habitats protect communities and more than a dozen at-risk military installations from floods, provide fish breeding grounds, and offer recreation and seafood to millions of people. 🎣 The plans, which are part of an effort to conserve and restore 1 million acres of salt marshes—roughly the size of Grand Canyon National Park—were developed by state-based member teams from the South Atlantic Salt Marsh Initiative (SASMI), a group of more than 400 stakeholders working to save marshes from encroaching seas, polluted runoff, unsustainable development, and other threats. #SASMI members include state and federal agencies, the U.S. military, scientists, businesses, Gullah Geechee representatives, and nonprofit organizations, including ORK. 🌾 Learn about the plan: https://arcg.is/15m5Dr0

⛈️ It's summer thunderstorm season, which can mean sudden downpours and the threat of flash flooding. One thing everyone can help with is making sure stormwater drains are clear of debris and litter. It keeps things flowing when the rain hits, plus it helps us keep litter out of our waterways. If you see one choked with debris, clear it (if you can safely) or report it to your local government so they can get it clean before the next storm. ⛈️ 📍If you live in a town that maps their drains, you can adopt one.
