"After much planning, we finally reached the historic groundbreaking for the Clara Luper Civil Rights Center in Northeast OKC. I’m proud of the people of Oklahoma City for committing to this project, and I know it will not only teach us important history, but it will inspire us for decades to come,” Mayor Holt said about today's milestone. Oklahoma City leaders broke ground today on the $17-million MAPS 4 Clara Luper Civil Rights Center, a new interpretive center and community gathering space. The Center will be located just south of Oklahoma City’s historic Freedom Center building at N Martin Luther King Avenue and NE 24th Street. The building is named in honor of Clara Luper, an educator, pioneering Civil Rights leader and longtime advisor for Oklahoma City’s NAACP Youth Council. Luper led her students in non-violent demonstrations to desegregate hundreds of establishments across Oklahoma during the 1950s and 60s, helping end segregation in public accommodations.  https://lnkd.in/enZbDEZW

Today, the Oklahoma City Council approved “One Voice. One OKC,” a terrazzo floor designed by Oklahoma City artist Matt Goad for the main concourse of the Continental Coliseum, which is under construction in downtown Oklahoma City. Goad describes the 80,000-square-foot terrazzo floor as a monumental visualization of the collective voice of Oklahoma City. Composed of overlapping concentric sound waves, the design radiates throughout the concourse in a rhythmic composition of softly graduated blue terrazzo. Inspired by the anticipation before a game and the resonance of thousands of voices becoming one, the artwork transforms sound into a permanent architectural expression woven into the building itself. The foundation is taking shape.   Today's concrete pour represents the first for Continental Coliseum, marking the beginning of the arena's foundation and another step toward bringing Oklahoma City's next world-class sports and entertainment venue to life.   As part of this milestone, a legacy capsule was also placed in the foundation, preserving artifacts that reflect Oklahoma City’s past, document this moment in time and capture the story behind Continental Coliseum for future generations.   Behind every milestone are the skilled craftspeople, engineers and project partners transforming years of planning into reality.
