Persistent, scalable surveillance in the world’s toughest environment. That’s what we’ll be demonstrating for the first time later this month, in collaboration with the NATO Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation (CMRE) and enabled by the NATO DIANA program. Today is a thrilling day for exploration! As we get ready to return to the moon, we are excited to share that our team has launched a new global initiative to address gaps and biases in deep-ocean visual observations: The Global Deep Sea Exploration Goals. The Goals are 10,000 scientifically selected locations on the deep seafloor, which, when visually observed, will produce the first statistically representative picture of the global deep sea. The methodology was published today in Science Advances. These targets are distributed across every ocean basin, every depth zone, and every type of seafloor terrain, including the regions that have seen the least exploration in seven decades of deep-sea science. Completing the Goals will nearly double the number of unique seafloor locations ever visually observed. The initiative is supported by an open-access interactive map where you can explore the point locations and how they were selected. This is not a small task. But it is an achievable one. A growing international coalition of organizations has already committed to supporting the initiative, including the National Geographic Society, Seabed 2030, OceanX, Schmidt Ocean Institute, Challenger 150, SpeSeas, Large Marine Vertebrates Research Institute Philippines (LAMAVE), Marmoris, Oceanswell, the Deep Ocean Observing Strategy, and many more. We welcome all researchers and organizations to join us as collaborators. Incredibly important and detailed article out today from CNN detailing the complex links between Chinese activity in deep sea mining, subsea infrastructure, ASW, and research vessel activity. "While none of this activity proves a military role on its own, taken together it strongly suggests the vessels may serve strategic, dual-use purposes as well as scientific ones, according to more than a dozen naval, civil and academic experts that CNN and Mongabay spoke with for this story." If the US fails to move quickly to extend its maritime reach to the deep seafloor, it will lose the western Pacific. Enabling routine, persistent presence in deep ocean environments is why Orpheus Ocean exists.

The Orpheus team has been growing rapidly, and we're excited to welcome three key new members to our crew! Chris DeCollibus, VP of Development: After 10 years at Teledyne Technologies Incorporated, Chris was an early employee at Dive Technologies before joining Anduril Industries to manage their AUV product line. Benjamin Erwin, Head of Marine Operations: Ben has spent decades at sea wrangling ocean robots with institutions like Schmidt Ocean Institute and MBARI - and was the first person to ever image a colossal squid in the wild. Vinay Naidu, Autonomy/GNC Engineer: Recently wrapping up a masters from Virginia Tech's Center for Marine Autonomy and Robotics, Vinay has already jumped headfirst into Orpheus's critical guidance and navigation challenges. Today, Japan announced the successful retrieval of rare earth element-containing muds from depths of nearly 6,000 m, near the island of Minamitorishima. This expedition, led by JAMSTEC: Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology, represents a first-ever demonstration of this type of resource recovery, as well as a significant step forward for Japan's critical mineral independence from China. As the demand for deep sea minerals accelerates around the world, scalable seabed data collection is vital to supporting a safe and sustainable industry.

Orpheus was in Halifax, NS last week for the NATO DIANA kickoff, hosted by COVE - we are honored to be part of an incredible cohort of companies in the Maritime Challenge. We spent the week diving into the US, Canada, and European defense ecosystems, including the critical need for seabed infrastructure surveillance. Customers were met, partnerships were formed, and demonstrations were planned. Thank you to Matt Clancey, Robyn Warrier, and Veronika Yordanova for putting together a great program. Next stop Munich!
