Orthopedics has gotten very good at measuring the thing that's easiest to measure: did the operation go as planned. Measuring whether the patient actually got their life back hasn't kept pace. Gabriella Ode, MD, FAOA, FAAOS, shoulder surgeon at Hospital for Special Surgery, gets at this in a recent Becker's Healthcare Spine Review feature. Her framing: "Patients rarely remember an operation simply because it was technically perfect. They remember whether it gave them their lives back." A surgical chart and a patient's life are two different scoreboards.
