PolyEngLab – Polymer, Elastomer & Composite Engineering Laboratory is a research group within the “Giulio Natta” Department of Chemistry, Materials and Chemical Engineering at Politecnico di Milano dedicated to the advanced characterisation of plastics, rubbers and composite materials. We perform rheological‑mechanical testing to correlate structure with material properties and integrate it with numerical modelling to predict performance under real‑world conditions across a variety of applications, including mobility, electronics, sports tech, high‑tech and consumer goods. What we do Mechanical testing (tension, flexure, compression, creep) on polymers, elastomers and composite laminates at low and high temperatures Fracture mechanics: KIC, GC, JC determination DMA (Dynamic Mechanical Analysis) & TMA (Thermo‑Mechanical Analysis) Rheometry – rotational Scratch testing and surface tribology DSC (Differential Scanning Calorimetry) for thermal transitions (Tg, Tm) Impact testing The lab houses dedicated sample‑preparation lines, environmental chambers, and thermal and tribological analysis equipment, along with proprietary FEM codes and materials databases. We collaborate with industrial partners, universities and research centres while training tomorrow’s materials engineers.

Visited Profs Maurizio Galimberti and Claudia Marano at Politecnico di Milano yesterday at the Giulio Natta institute for #polymerscience. Giulio Natta won the 1963 Nobel Prize for enabling chemistry that unlocked control over crystallization behavior in synthetic polymers. A true pilgrimage for polymer people!

It was a nice experience to share the results of my research in front of the scientific and industrial community at #ECCM22 in Oslo. At PolyEngLab we are designing innovative recycling approaches for composites, taking advantage of the properties of vitrimer matrices. Controlled delayering through mechanical actions and reprocessing is one of these, allowing to retain high properties with limited costs and energy consumption. [ 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲 ] EOLIAN has achieved a key milestone in its mission to develop a new generation of wind turbine blades manufactured using novel bio-based vitrimer composites. Project partners Proplast and Politecnico di Milano have succeeded in manufacturing basalt fibre reinforced vitrimer composite laminates using the infusion process. EOLIAN has successfully developed vitrimers with a bio-based content of 60% which demonstrate key vitrimer properties and infusion trials have been carried out using the most promising formulations. The high viscosity of vitrimers typically makes infusion challenging. However, in recent tests the EOLIAN team has successfully manufactured high-quality basalt fibre reinforced laminates at moderate temperatures. Research and testing are continuing to refine the vitrimer formulations and achieve the optimal balance between bio-based content, processability, and final performance to ensure their successful implementation in blade manufacturing. “The fibre reinforced composites currently used to manufacture wind turbine blades are not easy to recycle,” explains #EOLIAN project coordinator Marco Monti of Proplast. “In recent years, vitrimers have emerged as a potential breakthrough solution to this problem.
