Marylanders now have an easier way to recycle leftover paint! The Maryland PaintCare program launched its recycling program in the state on April 1st. The addition of the Maryland program brings PaintCare’s reach to serve one-third of the US population across thirteen programs. Households and businesses in Maryland can now responsibly dispose of their leftover paint at one of PaintCare’s 100+ drop-off sites across the state. Widespread, convenient access to stewardship programs is a key determinant of program success. PSI uses GIS mapping and data analysis to help states design programs that work for communities in real life — not just on paper. Some of the most difficult waste streams still lack clear, scalable solutions. PSI is helping states get ahead of emerging and complex products, including:  - Vape waste  - Household hazardous waste  - Other hard-to-manage materials This year, PSI worked with members and partners to pilot vape collections in Colorado, New York, and Missouri. These pilots help states:  - Understand what works—and what doesn’t  - Explore scalable, producer-funded solutions  - Prevent emerging products from becoming larger public health and waste challenges This work happens behind the scenes, but it’s essential to developing effective stewardship systems. 👉 Support PSI before December 31: https://lnkd.in/gY-wTEDP

Battery EPR continues to gain momentum nationwide—and PSI is fueling that wave. This year alone:  - New battery EPR programs were enacted for portable batteries in Colorado, Connecticut, and Nebraska. - Battery legislation advanced nationwide, with 45 battery-related EPR bills introduced across 20 states.  - Battery EPR scopes continued to expand to new battery types and applications, like e-bikes, better addressing safety, access, and implementation challenges. In 2025, PSI:  - Shared policy models that informed proposals in Connecticut, Nebraska, and Colorado.  - Provided bill analysis and technical support to states like Nebraska.  - Used GIS mapping to analyze infrastructure and identify gaps in support of new program implementation.   As battery EPR expands nationwide, PSI will work to:  - Incorporate best practices and lessons learned into new bills. - Provide state and local governments and producers with clear guidance.   - Offer technical support to troubleshoot safety, With your support, PSI delivers the policy analysis, technical assistance, and cross-state coordination needed to reduce confusion, avoid duplication, and make battery EPR smarter and more effective from the start.     👉 Make a year-end gift to support this work: https://lnkd.in/gY-wTEDP

This year alone:  - 30 packaging EPR bills were introduced in 13 states  - 4 bills were enacted  - New programs in Maryland and Washington  - Key amendments in Maine and Oregon    As states move quickly from legislation to implementation, PSI is helping ensure programs are designed to work in the real world by:  - Facilitating advisory boards  - Supporting needs assessments and program plan development - Providing technical assistance to governments and producers  - Helping boards work through hard conversations and reach compromise    In Colorado, that process paid off when the program plan was approved on December 10—after months of collaboration.
