  • A restaurant manager in Pennsylvania stopped our team during a visit lunch break to ask who we were, then thanked us. It turns out that the stream restoration work RES had been conducting upstream had cut the flooding on his property by more than half, and he wanted to know if we could continue onto his land. No one had briefed him. He simply noticed the water behaving differently and liked what he saw. That is how floodplain restoration tends to register. The engineering happens out in the valley, but people feel it closer to home, in their basements, their parking lots, and their fields. When a creek reconnects to its floodplain, it slows down, drops its sediment where sediment belongs, and recharges the ground it moves through, restoring the region’s hydrology. Those effects reach well past the project boundary, and into places people live, work and play. Our Northeast team has been building this approach across three Pennsylvania watersheds: Codorus Creek in York County, Babb Creek in Tioga County, and Paxton Creek, which runs through the middle of Harrisburg. A rural headwater, a forested valley, and a dense urban corridor. Three very different areas, but one shared idea about how water should be flowing and distributed. Two of those designs include habitat pools, a feature our team has refined over years of projects to give fish and amphibians shelter and to hold water long enough to do real work. In one, a native amphibian has started returning to water it had abandoned. Watershed-scale restoration works.   • The Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library in Medora, North Dakota opened on July 4, 2026, as a landmark example of integrated ecological design. Rather than landscaping around a completed building, the project made ecology central from day one. RES served as the ecological lead, injecting ecological principles and thinking into site design and sustainability goals to create a functioning landscape that is ecologically continuous with the North Dakota Badlands.   The result was a two-acre native green roof with 140,000 plants, 40 acres of restored prairie, and a site pursuing the world's highest sustainability certifications including Living Building Challenge v4.0, LEED Platinum, and SITES v2 Platinum.   • Florida's new stormwater rules are changing the game for development sites everywhere. A project that needed two to three acres for treatment a few years ago may now require three to four acres or more, taking valuable land out of development. What's the alternative?     Florida's new stormwater rules are changing how development sites need to be planned. A project that needed 2–3 acres for stormwater treatment a few years ago may now require 3–4 acres or more. On many sites, that's valuable land that can no longer be developed. Fortunately, there's another compliance option that's starting to change the conversation.   • RES has been awarded a five-year contract to restore 785 acres at Dutch Gap Forest Preserve in Antioch, Illinois, one of the larger aquatic ecosystem restoration efforts underway in the region. The project spans wetland, prairie, savanna, fen, riparian, and channel habitats. More than 64,000 linear feet of legacy drain tile. More than 190,000 native plugs, trees, and shrubs.   • A minnow doesn’t know where one landowner’s property ends, and the next begins. They just know the stream and depend on it for life. For decades, the standard way to repair a damaged stream was to fix one parcel, check the compliance box, and move on. But water moves downhill across boundaries. Sediment travels. A wetland drained three properties upstream still shapes what happens below it. So here’s the question that should keep anyone up at night before breaking ground on a large-scale project: if the environmental requirement has to hold for decades, why do so many restored sites quietly fall apart within a few years of the ribbon-cutting? The answer isn’t effort, and it isn’t money. It’s where you draw the boundary.     Part of what I really enjoy about my job is being a part of ecosystem restoration projects in areas/communities that I frequent, so I get to watch them 'grow up' and evolve over time. Last week I parked for a conference call in the PA Farm Show complex near a raingarden/SWM basin retrofit, and then drove up Elmerton Avenue by the Veterans Park/PA Fish and Boat Commission headquarters, just two projects we implemented in the Paxton Creek watershed. I also drove thru downtown where the Paxton is buried or channelized under buildings/parking lots. Watersheds are complex, and there are no easy/fast fixes. But we can make meaningful progress if there is a will and funding (which can come from a variety of places). Our team put together a neat StoryMap that lets you walk thru the watershed from a screen and see the upstream tributaries, the restored reaches, the connections that make the system function as a whole. The Paxton Creek watershed isn't 'fixed', but its getting better every day: for the bugs, for the fish, for the downstream Susquehanna River/Chesapeake Bay, and for us humans. Its good work.   • In Fort Worth, Texas, the Ham Branch Habitat Mitigation Project is helping restore ecological function while supporting the Fort Worth Modified Central City Project’s flood risk management goals.    Located within Harmon Field Park, the project will transform a degraded urban stream into a healthier stream and wetland system by restoring 1,965 linear feet of stream channel, 7.4 acres of riparian corridor, and 0.6 acres of emergent wetland habitat.    Additional improvements, including an upstream trash collection system and improved connectivity to the Trinity River, will support water quality, fish passage, and long-term resilience.    Led by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Fort Worth District, in partnership with the Tarrant Regional Water District and the City of Fort Worth, the broader Central City Project is designed to reduce flood risk for more than one million residents while enhancing community infrastructure and public spaces.    Learn more about the project in this Fort Worth Report article: https://lnkd.in/eJSyVHUX    Or check out our website: https://hubs.li/Q04n6GKV0   #WeAreRES #Texas #FortWorth

  • Halo Ranch is a powerful example of restoration shaped by the land, the people who know it best, and a shared commitment to long-term stewardship. We’re grateful to work with the Brazil family and our partners as construction begins in the Petaluma River Valley. #WeAreRES

    The best work I've ever been part of typically never starts by staring at a computer screen. It usually starts out in the field, boots in the mud, connecting with the land and the people who know it best. That's how the Halo Ranch Mitigation Bank in Petaluma began, and construction is now underway. It started with landowners who love their ground and wanted its next chapter to honor everything that came before. So we walked the property together, season after season, and built a plan around what the land was telling us. Today it's bringing back tidal wetlands, seasonal wetland meadows, stream, and riparian habitat, all while staying a working ranch. The cattle will still graze here, doing real work to manage a healthy ecosystem rather than something we had to plan around. What makes me especially proud is what it took to get it approved. Halo Ranch carries the San Francisco Army Corps District, the U.S. EPA, and the San Francisco Bay Regional Water Quality Control Board as signatories on the banking instrument and offers four different aquatic habitat credit types in one of the toughest regulatory landscapes in the country. These are the hard ones, the tangled, multi-agency projects folks swear can't get done.   • Projects like Elsie Gridley are a good reminder that successful mitigation begins long before construction. The most effective mitigation strategies don't focus on a single resource. They look at the landscape as a whole, balancing ecological function, regulatory requirements, and long-term stewardship to create lasting conservation value. When that work comes together, it does more than generate credits. It provides a durable foundation for future infrastructure projects while delivering meaningful ecological outcomes.     California vernal pools are anything but simple. Their strong seasonality, specialized species, and layered regulatory framework make them one of the most distinctive wetland systems in the country. This is why the Phase IV amendment to the Elsie Gridley Mitigation Bank is notable, as it contributes to one of the larger vernal pool mitigation and restoration efforts in the United States. At this site, mitigation credits are structured across vernal pool preservation, vernal pool creation, and species-specific credits. While “stacking” can sound like an efficiency strategy, each credit reflects a distinct ecological function and conservation outcome rather than duplication. For example, a single transaction may combine wetland and California tiger salamander credits, supporting multiple layers of conservation, including vernal pool hydrology and function, rare vernal pool plant communities, and potential vernal pool fairy shrimp habitat. This approach is only possible through close coordination and approval from USACE, USFWS, and CDFW to ensure each credit reflects a unique ecological function.
