I'm happy to contribute from the research line on Climate Justice at Centre of Expertise Global & Inclusive Learning and De Haagse Hogeschool / The Hague University of Applied Sciences. 🌡️ Heat Action Day 2026 – The Hague Making heat risks visible: science and practice in the city Extreme heat is no longer an occasional event — it is becoming a structural challenge for cities. The Hague is increasingly facing longer and more intense heat periods, affecting people, buildings, public space and urban systems. On June 2, 2026, during Heat Action Day, the Municipality of The Hague, The Hague University of Applied Sciences and Leiden University are hosting a knowledge-sharing event at the Spui Campus. This afternoon brings together policy, practice and research. The programme is structured around three perspectives: 🏥 Health – impacts on residents, especially vulnerable groups 🏢 Buildings – indoor heat and the role of design and use 🌳 Urban areas – heat in public space and at neighbourhood level Across these themes, we explicitly address the vulnerability of critical infrastructure — including energy, mobility, water, healthcare and ICT systems — which are increasingly under pressure during extreme heat. 🌱 Regenerative higher education: what happens when relational ambitions meet institutional realities? At our latest Multilateral Regulation research group monthly meeting, Jonas Carinhas shared their ongoing PhD research, sparking a rich conversation. Their work explores #regenerative higher education: an approach that moves beyond "doing less harm" to actively enhancing the potential of interconnected social-ecological systems and cultivating practices that contribute to more life-affirming futures. In the Netherlands, this ambition is taking concrete shape in the new Master's in Sustainable Transitions (MST) at THUAS — one of seven programmes developed under a national MST profile shared by a consortium of twelve universities of applied sciences. Nested in the Governance and Inclusive Development programme group at the AISSR (UvA), Jonas' PhD project studies MST at #THUAS as a critical case: how do educators achieve and navigate agency as they try to facilitate regenerative education within these institutional conditions? Methodologically, the project combines interviews, observations, autoethnography, focus groups, institutional document analysis, collective autoethnography and expert dialogues with the national MST consortium. Jonas wants to surface nuanced patterns of educator navigation and articulate generative principles and strategies that can inspire MST-type programmes and governance innovations in Dutch higher education and beyond. After briefly sketching the overall design, they zoomed in on a theme that has arisen in this first year of data collection: the issue of power dynamics in assessments. We were invited to share personal experiences, ideas and critical questions — and at the end of the session, we also had the opportunity to add our own reflections and feedback to their evolving inquiry. ------------------- We received a short visit from Leading Lector, Theo Bakker who has just started that position. He shared his vision for research. Multilevel Regulation Researcher, Kanan Dhru, who is currently involved in two research projects about responsible use of Artificial Intelligence - spent the afternoon at Ahmedabad University earlier this week listening to Professor Hasan Davulcu break down where AI is actually headed. The take-aways from the talk that stayed with her? 📍 We are in a 1990s-internet moment for AI and what is unfolding now is not incremental, but it is foundational. 📍 AI is still in its infancy. There are issues such as catastrophic forgetting and weak error-driven learning. For now, the human-in-the-loop isn't a feature but an important part of the architecture. 📍 Interesting shift is moving beyond the 'black box problem' toward programmable, explainable AI, where systems show you the proof and the references behind every decision. 📍 LegalAI is a promising area to watch with immense potential for impact. Not just automating law but rebuilding the infrastructure underneath it. Look at the opportunity in a three-layer stack: ↑ Lifting: taking the high-value complex work → Scaling: sorting and triage it at speed and ultimately, ↓ Lowering: making access cheaper and wider And in the five-year horizon, we could be watching disputes getting resolved before they reach a courtroom. Binnen het UN.locked-project van De Haagse Hogeschool / The Hague University of Applied Sciences werken twee onderzoekers van Research group Multilevel Regulation al samen met twee middelbare scholen in Den Haag. In dit programma maken leerlingen op een interactieve manier kennis met de Verenigde Naties, internationale organisaties en mondiale uitdagingen. This week, Research group Multilevel Regulation said a thankful "adieu" to junior researcher and intern, Zarin Hussain. Zarin has been working closely with Safety and Security Management Studies lecturer and MLR researcher, Anna Voß (née Matczak) who only had the very highest accolades for Zarin's work. Lector Barbara Warwas also expressed her thanks for Zarin's work at our research platform. We are looking forward to the upcoming defences for Zarin and wish her the very best.
