The City of DeBary is using data to better understand where its infrastructure and future developments are most vulnerable to flooding and storm surge. Through a comprehensive Climate Vulnerability Assessment, we identified vulnerable public assets and development areas to inform the city's infrastructure upgrades and land use decisions. The findings also guided important updates to DeBary’s proposed 2045 Comprehensive Plan. The effort was recognized with a 2025 Business Achievement Award from the Climate Change Business Journal. #ProjectSpotlight: An international pizza chain needed a clearer view of climate risk across its most exposed sites. We analyzed 69 climate-sensitive locations in North America and the UK, assessing risks from heat, heavy precipitation, wildfire, drought and flooding. 54% of U.S. manufactured housing is located in areas highly exposed to two or more climate hazards. Today marks one year since the powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck near Mandalay, Myanmar, with tremors felt as far away as Thailand. The disruption doesn’t end when the shaking stops. Days without power, safe water, passable roads or functioning hospitals are what ultimately determine how deeply a community is affected. Resilience often begins with practical planning; mapping how critical systems depend on one another, then strengthening the assets that keep multiple services running at once. Matt Huddleston, Principal Consultant, Climate Resilience, shares his perspective on utility resilience in an era of more frequent extreme weather: “What was once extreme is now the new normal. Utilities can be proactive by assessing current and future climate risks, identifying where systems are most vulnerable and prioritizing adaptations like undergrounding, enhanced pole designs, vegetation management, more resilient materials and targeted grid modernization. This proactive approach can help avoid massive outage and recovery costs.”
One year ago, a blizzard swept across eastern Nebraska and became the most destructive weather event in OPPD history. The eight-hour storm brought heavy ice and wind which caused widespread damage across our system and impacted nearly 132,000 customers. It ranked as the fifth‑largest outage event we’ve ever faced, but it caused far more physical damage than any other weather event in our history. Crews ultimately replaced 1,524 distribution poles and 71 transmission poles during the restoration effort. Engineers and meteorologists would later call it a “500-year event,” meaning the storm was a weather phenomenon with a 1 in 500 chance of occurring in any given year. Restoration was a complex and demanding process. Ice buildup placed extreme strain on power lines and structures. Crews worked through limited visibility during the storm, then faced difficult conditions as rising temperatures turned the ground to mud. More than 1,000 field workers, including contractors and mutual aid crews, supported the restoration. Behind the scenes, employees across the organization played essential roles in damage assessment, engineering, logistics, safety, communications and customer support. It was a coordinated effort that reached every corner of OPPD. 🧡
