🎉 We are thrilled to announce that Pedro Lima has been elected as the 𝗻𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗼𝗯𝗼𝗖𝘂𝗽 𝗙𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻! Pedro, Full Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), Universidade de Lisboa, will succeed Ubbo Visser following the conclusion of his term after RoboCup 2027. For 28 years, Pedro has been at the heart of RoboCup - as a team leader in the Middle Size, Rescue, and @Home League, as Executive Committee member, Trustee, Vice-President, and Chair of RoboCup 2004 in Lisbon. He is not only an outstanding researcher in the area of robotics, he is also a passionate advocate for educating the next generation of roboticists and expanding RoboCup's global impact. As humanoid robot platforms continue to advance at an incredible pace, the RoboCup 2050 vision of winning against the human soccer world champion has never felt closer. At the same time, exciting breakthroughs lie ahead across our Rescue, @Home, and Smart Manufacturing leagues. The future of RoboCup is bright, and we can't wait to embark on this next chapter with Pedro as president elect. Congratulations, Pedro, we're excited for you to lead our journey to 2050 starting next season! 🦾
About us
In the history of artificial intelligence and robotics, the year 1997 will be remembered as a turning point. The idea of robots playing soccer was first mentioned by Professor Alan Mackworth (University of British Columbia, Canada) in a paper entitled “On Seeing Robots” presented at VI-92, 1992. and later published in a book Computer Vision: System, Theory, and Applications, pages 1-13, World Scientific Press, Singapore, 1993. A series of papers on the Dynamo robot soccer project was published by his group. During the International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence (IJCAI-95) held at Montreal, Canada, August, 1995, the announcement was made to organize the First Robot World Cup Soccer Games and Conferences in conjunction with IJCAI-97 Nagoya. At the same time, the decision was made to organize Pre-RoboCup-96, in order to identify potential problems associated with organizing RoboCup on a large scale. The decision was made to provide two years of preparation and development time, so that initial group of researchers could start robot and simulation team development, as well as giving lead time for their funding schedules. Pre-RoboCup-96 was held during International Conference on Intelligence Robotics and Systems (IROS-96), Osaka, from November 4 – 8, 1996, with eight teams competing in a simulation league and demonstration of real robot for middle size league. While limited in scale, this competition was the first competition using soccer games for promotion of research and education. The first official RoboCup games and conference was held in 1997 with great success. Over 40 teams participated (real and simulation combined), and over 5,000 spectators attended.

With the conclusion of the Symposium today, RoboCup 2026 in Incheon has come to an end. Over the past days, teams, researchers, and students from high schools and universities around the world came together to push the boundaries of robotics and AI, demonstrating outstanding teamwork and technological excellence. And we even celebrated the world premiere of an 11 vs. 11 humanoid soccer match! Thank you, Incheon, for being such a fantastic host for RoboCup 2026! At the same time, we hand over the flag to RoboCup Germany, host of RoboCup 2027. RoboCup 2027 will take place in Nuremberg from 15-21 June 2027. As next year's competition marks the 30th anniversary of RoboCup, we have many exciting highlights planned! A dedicated workshop area will provide teams with tools and support from trainees of local companies to help repair their robots. A campground next to the competition venue will offer affordable accommodation and a unique community atmosphere. And if you are looking to become a volunteer for RoboCup, then you will spend the nights in one of the most beautiful youth hostels in Europe, located in the historic castle right in the city center. RoboCup 2027 will conclude with one of the biggest celebrations in RoboCup history at the Max-Morlock-Stadion, home of 1. FC Nürnberg, celebrating diversity, collaboration, and our shared passion for robotics, AI, and innovation. We look forward to welcoming you all to Nuremberg in 2027!

Today, RoboCup 2026 made history. For the first time ever, two full teams of autonomous humanoid robots played a full 11-vs-11 soccer match on a real field. This isn't just another robotics demonstration. It's a milestone that brings us one step closer to RoboCup's bold 2050 vision: developing a team of humanoid robots capable of playing and defeating the human soccer world champion. Every robot on the field perceived the environment, made its own decisions, coordinated with teammates, and played without human intervention during the match. Nearly 30 years after RoboCup was founded, what once seemed impossible has become reality. This historic match marks a breakthrough not only for robotics, but also for embodied AI, autonomous systems, and the future of intelligent machines. The future isn't coming. It just kicked off. ⚽ #RoboCup2026 #Robotics #ArtificialIntelligence #RoboCup #AI #Innovation
