  • $40 billion. That's what EchoStar raised selling spectrum to AT&T and SpaceX in late 2025. Yet Hughes Network Systems, long the company's cash engine, is now facing severe liquidity constraints. The easy read: EchoStar is fumbling a windfall. The real read: that money was never for Hughes. It's clearing corporate debt and settling buildout mandates while each subsidiary gets triaged on its own terms. DISH DBS took the prepackaged Chapter 11 route in June.   • EchoStar raised $40 billion selling spectrum to AT&T and SpaceX. Its Hughes unit is still running out of cash. New financial reports show Hughes Network Systems facing severe liquidity constraints, with a Chapter 11 filing or targeted debt restructuring now on the table for the subsidiary. The context: DISH DBS entered prepackaged Chapter 11 on June 30 over $10 billion in debt. Hughes was deliberately kept out of that filing. After CEO Hamid Akhavan's exit, Chairman Charlie Ergen now runs the Hughes block directly.     Amazon wants 5,105 more satellites for direct-to-device. Starlink already has Direct-to-Cell in service. AST SpaceMobile is locking up carrier deals.   • 5,105 satellites. That is what Amazon just asked the FCC for, on top of the 3,236 already authorized. Amazon Leo is no longer just a broadband play. The new filing targets voice, data, and emergency connectivity delivered straight to unmodified smartphones, a head-on challenge to Starlink's Direct-to-Cell. The hardware tells the story: phased-array antennas, onboard processing, and optical inter-satellite links that route traffic across the constellation without touching a ground station. This architecture is built for real-time voice and streaming, not just SMS. Target deployment starts in 2028. The direct-to-device race now has an 8,341-satellite contender, and the FCC's Supplemental Coverage from Space framework just became the most important regulatory queue in the industry.   • Orbit is running out of radio. As orbital computing projects like Google's Project Suncatcher and mega-constellations generate more data in space, RF infrastructure is hitting hard physical limits: spectrum congestion and throughput ceilings. Astrolight's answer is an end-to-end laser communications network. Not a terminal here and a terminal there. The full optical chain, space to space and space to ground.   • The FCC wants to open Bluetooth and Wi-Fi bands to space. Read that again. The unlicensed spectrum your earbuds use could soon carry satellite IoT traffic. The proposed rulemaking, released last Wednesday, targets global IoT connectivity where licensed spectrum is too scarce or too expensive. Most people think unlicensed means low value. What it actually means is zero spectrum acquisition cost for constellation operators. That changes the economics of satellite IoT overnight. The barrier to entry was never launch. It was spectrum. If this passes, watch how many IoT constellation business plans suddenly close their funding rounds. Who benefits most: incumbents with hardware in orbit, or the startups this rule just unlocked?   • The Space Force is planning its biggest fleet expansion ever. It is 25 percent short of the people needed to run it. A GAO report released Saturday warns the service must fix its personnel metrics before the buildout, not after. You cannot surge trained guardians the way you surge satellite procurement.   • Hot take: Amazon Leo's 5,105-satellite direct-to-device filing is not about eliminating dead zones. It is about locking the telecom industry into AWS. D2D revenue per user is tiny. Emergency texting and rural voice calls will not pay for 5,105 satellites. But every mobile operator that signs a supplemental coverage deal ends up integrating with Amazon's network stack, its ground segment, and its cloud. The satellites are the loss leader. The enterprise contracts are the product. Starlink is selling connectivity. Amazon is selling dependency.
