Diskutiert wurden u.a. #SBTN #Naturrisiken #Biodiversität Louisa Lösing, Jenja Kronenbitter, Konstantin Altefrohne, Janosch Birkert, Maren Hundhammer, Pius Stuchtey, Yilan Tao, Stella M.

The Science Based Targets Network (SBTN)'s "Step Up for Nature" campaign is a global call for companies to take credible, science-based action for nature. It invites companies to publicly signal their next milestone toward setting science-based targets for freshwater and nature, demonstrating private-sector momentum ahead of the 2026 Global Biodiversity Stocktake. Major players across sectors include adidas, Danone, Decathlon, General Mills, H&M Group, Holcim, Huali Industrial Group Company Limited, Novo Nordisk, Ørsted, Sodexo, and dozens more. The initiative focuses on the first three steps of the target-setting process: 1) Signal ambition publicly. 2) Complete required assessment work. 3) Achieve independent validation through SBTN's Accountability Accelerator. Expect this to feed into broader disclosure frameworks and eventually regulatory requirements. Explore the full ambition board and learn more: https://lnkd.in/eswrSFeS

  • 🚛 Supply chain traceability matters for science-based nature action -- but companies don't need to wait for perfect upstream visibility before getting started. When exploring the science-based targets for nature journey, companies sometimes say, “We don’t have enough upstream data to proceed.” Many are still in the process of building supply chain traceability, especially beyond direct operations. But this doesn't have to be a barrier to action. 🔍 Companies can begin with the parts of the value chain they can already see, use supplier information and credible estimates, and improve traceability over time. In practice, supplier engagement often becomes part of the solution. ⏩One retailer using the SBTN framework found that supplier engagement helped surface better data and build a more accurate picture of where impacts sat in its supply chain.  ⏩ Another company said SBTN helped it find a workable way to start with the data it already had — showing that target-setting could begin without perfect traceability, and where some data was only available at country level. 💡Learn more about how companies can overcome misconceptions and take credible action for nature today: https://lnkd.in/ev_UWEVC

  • Science-based action on nature is not just for large multinationals. Micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises may be smaller individually, but their collective influence is significant. According to the World Economic Forum, SMEs generate 70% of global employment and contribute up to 70% of global GDP. They play crucial roles in supply chains and collectively represent significant spending power -- giving them real levers to influence the private sector's impact on #nature. So how can smaller companies take credible action on nature?  Start with the information already in hand. Identify the operations, sourcing areas, or suppliers where pressure on nature is highest and where action would be most meaningful. #SBTN's five-step target-setting approach can help guide small companies toward which actions to prioritize with limited resources. Most smaller companies already have the fundamentals they need to get started: supplier and sourcing knowledge, certifications, and/or existing sustainability work. We are already seeing this in practice. KLS PurePrint A/S, a small printing and packaging company, recently validated its materiality assessment and prioritization work using the SBTN approach. KLS found that the validation process was actually easier than expected once they got started and worked through the guidance step-by-step. Businesses around the world are stepping up for nature through science-based targets. Even in uncertain times, corporate commitments and validated progress through the Science Based Targets Network (SBTN)’s framework are sending a clear signal: credible action on nature is becoming a core business priority, and ambition is starting to translate into practice. At London Climate Action Week, we were pleased to bring together companies at different stages of their SBTN journey for an interactive workshop exploring experiences, challenges and common questions around the SBTN process. Participants shared valuable insights and lessons learned, while the Accelerator’s Validation Director Paola D. Luna and SBTN’s Science Translation Lead Oscar K. Sabag Muñoz offered practical guidance for navigating the process and advancing towards validated milestones. Some key themes stood out: ➡️ Accelerated pathways: Companies were interested in how they can start taking credible action, faster. SBTN’s accelerated pathways offer companies a flexible, modular way to begin setting science-based targets for nature, allowing companies to narrow their scope by business unit, environmental realm or value chain segment. ➡️ Interoperability: Participants discussed how SBTN aligns with other sustainability initiatives and reporting requirements. As one Chief Sustainability Officer commented, “SBTN helps us with CSRD - one thing helps the other.” ➡️ Business strategy alignment: A recurring priority was demonstrating how nature targets support broader business objectives. This reflects a growing recognition that nature is not only a sustainability issue but also a business issue - one that is increasingly central to resilience, risk management, strategic decision-making, and future preparedness. Thank you to all the companies, consultants and partners who joined us in London. We are energised by the level of engagement and investment we are seeing from businesses and look forward to building on these conversations in the months ahead. • In our latest newsletter, SBTN's CEO Erin Billman reflects on one of the biggest barriers making corporate action on nature harder: "the complexity trap." "Nature impacts are location-specific, value chains are long, and data is imperfect. And while many companies are already acting on nature, it’s often through disparate water, biodiversity, sourcing, certification, or supplier programs. "Without a science-based structure, it is hard for companies to know whether their existing efforts are focused in the right places, addressing the right issues, or adding up to credible progress. The risk is that companies mistake activity for progress — or wait for perfect data before acting." Read on to learn how leading companies are avoiding getting stuck — and instead are using science-based targets to cut through complexity by clarifying what matters most, where action is needed, and how progress can be credibly measured and validated.

  •  As London Climate Action Week puts the spotlight on how companies can build resilience in a changing climate, a new cohort of companies is stepping up and signaling their intended progress toward science-based targets for nature. Today, #SBTN announced the first companies preparing to set expanded freshwater targets through a pilot program, which launched earlier this month. These leading companies are building early experience in applying updated freshwater target-setting methods across different sectors and value chains: adidas, Arla Foods, Danone, Decathlon, General Mills Inc., H&M Group, Metso Oyj, and Talawakelle Tea Estates PLC (Member of Hayleys Plantations Sector). Many of the companies involved in our freshwater pilot program have also publicly signaled their next steps for nature as part of SBTN’s Step Up for Nature initiative. More than 40 companies are now listed on the SBTN #AmbitionBoard, collectively signaling their intent to take science-based action on nature in line with the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (#GBF). Meanwhile, we've seen four new companies disclose science-based materiality assessment and prioritization work on the SBTN target tracker this month, validated by the Accountability Accelerator: Sodexo, Hermès International, Orkla Foods Sverige, and Limak Cement. Together, these signals point to a shift in the market: leading companies are not waiting for perfect data or full traceability to step up for nature. They are using science-based targets to cut through complexity by clarifying what matters most, where action is needed, and how progress can be credibly measured and validated.
