Packaging recycling laws are facing a new test—in court. On July 14, a federal judge temporarily blocked enforcement of California’s SB 343 “Truth in Recycling” labeling requirements while the legal challenge proceeds. Three days later, a federal court concluded a five-day trial challenging Oregon’s packaging EPR program. A decision remains pending. Together, the cases raise broader questions about recyclability claims, producer fees, interstate commerce and the authority granted to producer responsibility organizations. As more states move from enacting packaging and recycling laws to implementing them, the outcomes could influence how these programs are structured nationwide.

Good policy starts with understanding how things work. Earlier this week, Andy Hackman and Edwin Borbon joined Alison Keane and the International Sleep Products Association (ISPA) for a behind-the-scenes look at mattress manufacturing and recycling in Washington. Thank you to Serta Simmons Bedding, LLC, Tempur Sealy International, and Arlington Recycling for opening their doors and providing a firsthand look at the people, processes, and innovation behind the industry. There’s no substitute for seeing an operation up close, and experiences like these help connect policy conversations with real-world operations.

Salt Lake City was the place to be last week for CSG West. Edwin Borbon from our Sacramento office joined state leaders and colleagues from across the western states for a week of conversations on the issues shaping the region. Looking forward to seeing everyone in Alaska next year.

There’s something special about seeing a New England artist take the stage at Fenway Park. Last week, Pierce Haley, Andrea Serlin , Nina Fisher, and Jennifer Dolin from Lutron Electronics joined the Foundation To Be Named Later for Noah Kahan’s sold-out show. Great music, a beautiful Boston evening, and an even better cause made for a memorable night. Thank you to the Foundation To Be Named Later for hosting such a wonderful evening.

Some of the best conversations happen with people who are just getting started. Pierce Haley had the opportunity to speak with this year's legislative interns at the Massachusetts State House, and they didn't disappoint. Thoughtful questions, genuine curiosity, and a great discussion about government, public policy, and careers in government affairs. The best part? Several have already followed up to keep the conversation going. That's always a good sign.

Some announcements are even better the second time around! Last year, we introduced Lindsay Gothard as a Serlin Haley intern. Today, we're excited to welcome her back as our newest Government Relations Specialist. After graduating from Northeastern University this spring with a degree in Political Science and Environmental Studies, Lindsay returned to the firm full time. Along the way, she also gained valuable experience through a co-op with the Massachusetts Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation. It's been fun watching Lindsay grow over the past year, and we're excited to have her continue her career with us. We look forward to the thoughtful perspective and collaborative approach she'll bring to our clients, our team, and the work we do every day.
