Before the Americans with Disabilities Act, there was Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and a group of young people who made it happen. If you have Netflix, you can watch the story in the documentary called “Crip Camp,” but if you want to feel inspired now, here are the details: In the 70s, a group of teens found empowerment and confidence at a camp for youth with disabilities. They went on to become participants in the famous Section 504 sit-ins, which led to the signing of important anti-discrimination legislation for people with disabilities. Their story shows us the amazing power young people hold when they feel supported and represented! Note: Crip Camp is rated R, so we recommend researching before watching with your family.
