Today, our CEO Tetiana Aleksandrova took the stage at WOMEN IN AI · The Debate at the Googleplex, and left inspired. It was a women-led debate on the questions that actually matter right now: How do we lead progress responsibly in the AI era? How is AI reshaping the way we build and manage companies and products? What perspective do women bring to AI that would otherwise be missing? And what will the AGI era look like, and when will it arrive? Tetiana's message was direct: be brave, be active, and engage early with your audience and investors. Being a female founder isn't a footnote to the work. It shapes it. Women bring a perspective that leads to stronger, safer execution and to products the world can actually trust. That last point sits at the core of what we're building at Subsense. The field of BCI is expanding, but the biggest advances ahead won’t come from making today's technology incrementally better. They will come from rethinking the problem entirely. BCIs can transform brain health, but to do so, the technology needs to be practical enough for the people they're meant to serve. Our Head of R&D, Scott Meek, Ph.D., spoke with BioWorld News about why reducing barriers to adoption is just as important as advancing the science, and why novel approaches like the one we’re developing at Subsense could help expand access to BCI technology. Faster and Safer Aren’t a Trade-Off China just issued a reimbursement code for the world’s first commercial brain implant — within days of approving it. The US still treats coverage as a separate fight that can take years. That gap, not the technology, is the real race. Here’s the backdrop. Two of China’s leading BCI companies, Neuracle and BrainCo, are heading for the public markets — one on Shanghai’s STAR Market, the other in Hong Kong. First-half funding has already passed RMB 4 billion (~$556M), above the full 2025 total and up roughly 230% from the same period last year. A lot of people frame this as a technology race. That misses the more useful story. Western programs still lead on signal quality and depth of clinical evidence. China moved this fast because its policy was built for the pace — standards and pricing set before products existed, and approval tied directly to reimbursement. That’s a model worth studying. The US has the opposite problem. FDA approval is only the starting line. Coverage is a separate process: Medicare and private insurers each decide on their own, which for a novel device can take years — with no guarantee at the end. Of the novel medical technologies the US authorized between 2016 and 2019, fewer than half ever secured Medicare coverage. The field has a name for this gap: the reimbursement valley of death. And the cost is measured in patients. People with Parkinson’s, drug-resistant epilepsy, and paralysis are waiting years longer than the science requires. So the opportunity is clear. Build coverage alongside regulatory review, not years after it. Make timelines predictable enough to plan around. Set standards early, and set them high. Moves like the proposed RAPID pathway point the right way and deserve to become the norm. Speed and trust have to advance together. For a field that reads and writes to the human brain, neural-data rights, informed consent, and long-term safety aren’t features you add later — they’re the foundation you build on.
