We're excited to share that as part of our collaboration with the University of California, Merced our first large-format perovskite-silicon tandem panel is now installed on the top of their Science and Engineering building for real-world testing. Working with Professor Sarah Kurtz and her team, we will collect and analyze performance data over the coming months, which is an important step as we validate durability and advance toward commercial-scale manufacturing. Our partnership gives UC Merced students hands-on experience at the intersection of research, advanced manufacturing, and commercialization. As Professor Kurtz told UC Merced News: “Tandem PV has mastered many of the critical steps and is the leading company in the United States for this kind of technology.” We’re grateful to UC Merced, the California Energy Commission, and the researchers and students helping move next-generation solar technology from the lab into the field. Scott Wharton talks with Robinson Meyer for the Heatmap News "Shift Key" podcast about how perovskite is the game changer for next generation solar panels. "One of the reasons why I’m very excited about where we are in the perovskite space is that you need a combination of efficiency and durability and manufacturability to sell stuff. So on the efficiency side, a few weeks ago, we unveiled that we broke 30% on a panel, not a cell. So 30.4%. So that’s already way better than a silicon panel will ever be. And then on the durability side, we’re showing that we’re less than 1% degradation per year. Former U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm has spent her career working on issues at the heart of our mission, from cleaner power to stronger American manufacturing. Today, we’re honored to welcome her to Tandem PV’s Board of Directors. Why is this such a big deal? As CEO Scott Wharton points out, hitting 30% in solar energy is like breaking the two-hour barrier in a marathon. It is a threshold that is simply unreachable for conventional silicon panels.
