As rack densities rise, so do the pressure and flow demands placed on cooling systems. In a new piece for DCD, Tate's head of R&D, Aidan Jones, points to several properties of stainless steel that become more relevant as a result. Pressure tolerance: Stainless steel piping typically operates at 50 to 60 percent of its allowable pressure rating, leaving margin to absorb future increases in system pressure. Leak risk: Many leaks originate at a joint, so the number of joints in a system matters. Stainless steel can be fabricated using formed flanges, bent tubes and collared connections, methods that reduce how many joints a system needs. Corrosion resistance: Stainless steel naturally passivates when exposed to oxygen, a layer that's reinforced after welding through processes like pickling. Jones also points to the codes and certification processes that govern stainless steel piping, covering sourcing, welding, testing and installation.
