Ted Stevens Center for Arctic Security Studies

The Arctic is a critical frontier for National security, and preparing our future leaders to operate in this unique environment is more important than ever. The Ted Stevens Center for Arctic Security Studies recently concluded its 2026 Joint Service Academy Arctic Immersion Program. This year’s program included cadets from the U.S. Air Force Academy and the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. Looking ahead, we aim to expand this vital immersion program to include emerging leaders from across the Department of War. Congratulations to the cadets on completing this rigorous hands-on curriculum and advancing research critical to our Nation’s security interests in the High North.

This week, the Ted Stevens Center for Arctic Security Studies had the distinct privilege of hosting a series of pivotal engagements with key stakeholders in the U.S. Arctic mission. Central to these discussions was the Center’s ongoing contribution to bolstering the Nation’s Homeland Defense, enhancing deterrence capabilities, and helping expand the Defense Industrial Base. Mr. Shannon Jenkins, U.S. Coast Guard Senior Arctic Policy Advisor, highlighted the value of the TSC's work, he praised the team, remarking, "You make our job easier with your impact." U.S Coast Guard Capt. Joel Carse brought vital operational and educational perspective to the conversation. Having recently completed a TSC course, Capt. Carse praised the curriculum, stating, "Your course completely redefined my understanding of the High North, thank you."

Last week, the TSC said farewell to a plank-holder and critical member of front office team. “I’m excited for the future and for what the horizon holds for the Ted Stevens Center, the regional center enterprise, the Department of War, and our Nation,” said Terrence Shanigan, who joined the TSC in 2022, and served as our Logistics Planner & Administrator, and previously as our strategic engagement deputy director. Terrence will be joining the Administration Faculty at the Mt Edgecumbe Highschool in Sitka, Alaska, continuing a life-long tradition of service.

Mead Treadwell, TSC Energy & Economics Arctic Interest Chair, visited to speak on Alaska’s role in homeland defense. TSC staff, military fellows, and service academy interns recently attended the Arctic Missile Defense Field Workshop. The excursion provided a hands-on historical perspective of Arctic Security challenges. Our summer cadet curriculum is a holistic dive into the different areas of risk to our Nation. Our intent with these experiences is to expose cadets to the past, present, and future of the U.S. Arctic.
