  • Genetic data is powerful, but only if you can make sense of it.    Duncan Neurological Research Institute (Duncan NRI) and Baylor College of Medicine researchers developed AI-MARRVEL to do exactly that. This unique AI-powered tool integrates clinical and genetic data to pinpoint disease-causing mutations, outperforming other available tools with twice the diagnostic success rate. Just recently, Drs. Hyun-hwan Jeong and Zhandong Liu released the latest version of AI-MARRVEL, MARRVEL-MCP, which allows anybody to interact with the AI system and receive clear, evidence-based responses to questions such as, “Is this BRCA1 mutation linked to cancer?”    It’s not just more data. It’s better answers, faster, helping us solve conditions once thought unsolvable.   Learn more about AI-MARRVEL » https://lnkd.in/gXDy9ngR

  • Most healthcare AI has been developed primarily for adults - but children are not small adults.    Their physiology, development, diseases and care needs are fundamentally different. That is why Texas Children’s is building a safe, pediatric-first AI ecosystem designed specifically to improve care and discovery for children.    This work is supported by data at an extraordinary scale, including more than 5 million unique patients, 23 million radiology studies and 896 million clinical notes. Yet, scale alone is not enough. These data must be paired with rigorous governance, clinical expertise, secure infrastructure and careful validation.    Dr. Zhandong Liu and his team at Texas Children’s and Baylor College of Medicine have built the foundation for this effort: extensive pediatric data resources, advanced robotics and biobanking capabilities, a modern AI and computing platform and a growing portfolio of validated clinical and research applications.    Together, these capabilities support a disciplined plan to build an AI-enabled children’s hospital across five foundational pillars.    The vision extends far beyond Texas Children’s. We aim to create a blueprint that can help pediatric institutions worldwide deliver faster, safer, and more precise answers for every child.

  • Congratulations to Dr. Rui Yang, a Research Vision Scholar at Texas Children’s Hospital and a clinical fellow in the Department of Pediatrics, Allergy and Immunology at Baylor College of Medicine, on being awarded the Burroughs Wellcome Fund Career Award for Medical Scientists (CAMS).    This prestigious award supports the next generation of physician-scientists who are advancing groundbreaking work and shaping the future of medicine.   • What started as a medical mystery led researchers to discover an entirely new disease.    For years, Michele Herndon had searched for answers for her son, Mitchell, who had serious neurological symptoms that could not be explained. Their medical odyssey led them to geneticist and rare disease expert Dr. Hugo Bellen at the Duncan Neurological Research Institute (Duncan NRI) and Baylor College of Medicine. Dr. Bellen uncovered a rare genetic mutation never seen before and soon found two more patients with the exact same mutation, confirming a new condition now called Mitchell Syndrome.    Research revealed how the mutation damages cells in the nervous system and pointed to potential treatment strategies that could slow or prevent the disease.    Stories like these make the Duncan NRI the leading destination for solving the unsolvable.   • From patient to future caregiver ❤️   This week, Texas Children's patient Kayleigh had the opportunity to shadow the very surgeon who helped change her life, pediatric surgeon Dr. Jacob Stephenson.   Inspired by the care she received at Texas Children's after her treatment for Slipped Rib Syndrome, Kayleigh is now pursuing her dream of becoming a CRNA with a focus on pain management.   "I want to become a CRNA to help people the way that my CRNAs and my doctors have helped me. Being able to use my story to impact other kids is going to be really useful. To shadow a doctor that was my doctor is really cool. When I was a patient, I was focused on getting better. Now getting to see how much work goes into being able to help the patients get better is just such an amazing experience."   Kayleigh's journey is a powerful reminder that compassionate care doesn't just change lives. It inspires the next generation of healthcare providers.
