Let me tell you the remote skillsets that are actually in demand right now in 2026. 1) Virtual Assistance Every busy founder, executive and business owner needs someone to take things off their plate. Email management, calendar coordination, research, admin support, clients hire VAs so they can focus on growing their business instead of running it. 2) Social Media Management Every brand that wants to exist online needs consistent, quality content. Clients hire social media managers because they know showing up on these platforms matters but they simply don't have the time or skill to do it well themselves. If you understand content, strategy and scheduling this is for you. 3) Project Management As remote teams grow, someone has to keep everything from falling apart. Clients need project managers who can track timelines, coordinate people, manage deliverables and make sure nothing gets lost in everything. 4) AI and Automation The need for this one is rising fast…… Clients need people who can use AI tools to improve their workflows, automate repetitive tasks and save the business time and money. When you finally land a Remote Job Congratulations is the first thing. But the second thing? Let's talk about that. Because landing the job is one thing. Keeping it as a Nigerian is a whole other conversation that nobody really prepares you for. Here are things every Nigerian should do immediately after landing a remote role 👇🏻 1) Sort out your power situation immediately Not when you get your first paycheck. Now. Your client does not care about NEPA. They don't know what NEPA is. What they know is that you went offline in the middle of a task or missed a deadline and that's all that matters to them. 2) Get a reliable internet backup Never depend on one network. Never. Have a primary connection and a backup ready to switch to at any moment. Different providers if possible. Because your MTN will choose your most important client call to show you shege. 😂 3) Set up your payment method before your first invoice Don't wait until payday to figure out how you'll collect your money. The stress of domiciliary accounts and unfavourable exchange rates is real. Platforms like Raenest, Wise, Grey and Cleva exist specifically to make receiving foreign payments easier for Nigerians. Set one up before you even start work so that when it's time to get paid, the process is smooth. 4) Understand your contract and protect yourself Read every single document before you sign anything. Pay attention to the payment terms, the termination clause, the scope of work and your working hours. Some contracts have clauses that restrict you from taking other clients. Know what you're agreeing to. 5) Keep a professional backup plan for government policy changes This one is something most people don't think about until it affects them. Nigerian government policies around forex, international transactions and fintech platforms can change without much notice. We've seen platforms get restricted or suspended before. Don't keep all your financial eggs in one basket. Have more than one payment platform set up. Stay informed about policy changes that could affect your ability to receive payments or operate freely as a remote worker. 6) Communicate proactively with your client The moment you anticipate a problem, light, network, health, anything, tell your client before it becomes a missed deadline. Landing the job is the beginning, not the destination. Set yourself up properly from day one so that the things Nigeria throws at you don't become the reason you lose a good client. If your VA portfolio is empty, you're not stuck, you just don't know what to put in it yet. A lot of people freeze because they think "I've never worked with a client, so I have nothing to show." That's not true. Here's what actually goes into a portfolio when you're starting from zero: 1️⃣ Mock projects — pick a niche and build sample work for a fictional client 2️⃣ Before-and-afters — clean up a messy inbox, calendar, or spreadsheet and show the transformation 3️⃣ Screen recordings — a Loom video of you scheduling a post or organizing a Trello board says a lot more than words 4️⃣ Certificates — any course or training you've completed counts 5️⃣ Testimonials — even from unpaid work, if it shows you deliver A portfolio isn't proof you've been paid before.
