Calling it now: Monica Lalut is about to take off 🎶 "all yours" went from 7 placements in May to 184 in June - a +2529% month-over-month gain! The largest single-song surge in six months of data. 736,000 views. 25 countries. First month out. What's more interesting than the number is where the placements came from. A Japanese woman reacting to the Medellin metro for the first time. A Korean creator's solo trip through Taiwan's south coast. A Japanese couple's Seoul restaurant diary. A Taiwan apartment renovation. These aren't trend-chasing videos. They're the platform's most persistent format - people documenting moments that matter to them. "all yours" found the same emotional register across four countries simultaneously, without a push, without a campaign. The song works because it doesn't try to. Warm, personal, unhurried. It matches the emotional weight of daily-life content without competing with it. Travel is on track to overtake Food as the #1 creator niche in July. That's exactly the content already adopting this song. The conditions for continued growth are already in place. Watch this one 👏 Which independent artists are you seeing gain traction right now? Three problems with AI music for YouTube that don't show up in the "free" pricing. 1. Copyright ownership is unsettled. The U.S. Copyright Office concluded in 2025 that purely AI-generated works lack copyright protection. That means the tool can't protect you either - and there's no license to fall back on if a claim comes in. 2. Training data liability is live. Sony's lawsuit against Udio is still unresolved as of 2026. Suno and Udio both settled with Warner and Universal - which means the legal exposure was real enough to resolve out of court. The underlying question of whether AI tools trained on unlicensed recordings creates downstream liability hasn't been answered. 3. Content ID doesn't distinguish AI from human music. Some AI tools register their own outputs in YouTube's fingerprint database. Creators using their own tool's music can get claimed by the same company they paid for it. "Free" AI music shifts the risk. It doesn't eliminate it. Full breakdown - tool by tool, risk by risk below. https://lnkd.in/gs4A6U4P #AIMusic #MusicCopyright #CreatorEconomy #YouTubeCreators #MusicLicensing

Did you know that over 80% of Gen Z discover new music through UGC on social media and YouTube? The worst thing you can do as an artist is let a potential fan click over to your YouTube channel only to find a messy profile and empty descriptions. Don't lose the momentum! Our #SongtrustAmplified partner Thematic breaks down the exact strategy to clean up your page, leverage search trends, and turn casual clickers into loyal fans. A 58-year-old widower in Tokyo launched a YouTube channel to preserve memories of his late wife. His first video got 9 million views. Takashio Matsumoto posts as pecorino. Retirement, aging, finding meaning - content for people navigating the same chapter he is. He's been featured in domestic and international newspapers and television. He's deliberate about music in a way worth paying attention to. He says he "deliberately chooses beautiful songs as background music that don't quite fit the image of an elderly person." His audience noticed and praised the contrast. That deliberateness is part of what makes the channel his. The unexpected pairing isn't incidental - it's identity. Creators who make intentional music choices build content that's harder to replicate and easier to remember. The creator economy includes demographics that most platform strategies underestimate. Matsumoto's audience is engaged, underserved by traditional media, and watching because nothing else sounds like this. https://lnkd.in/gVrn4Hn2 #CreatorEconomy #MusicDiscovery #MusicIndustry #ContentCreators

A song written as satire of a fictional Italian pop star found 10.5 million plays on Italian TikTok. No pitch. No campaign. No label. Zeke Reed releases music as Friends Of from a converted tool shed in Topanga, California. "Ciao Baby" was an in-joke about a character he invented. Italian TikTok found it anyway - 31,000+ videos. A separate track appeared in roughly 1,600 creator videos and generated 26,000 Spotify streams without major playlist promotion. What's interesting isn't the virality. It's the specificity. Italian speakers found a song about Italian culture. A Korean creator built a sandwich series around a different track. Neither of those matches came from a targeting decision - they came from the catalog being in front of the right people. That's what creator-driven discovery produces at scale. The audience finds the fit. The artist doesn't have to predict it. https://lnkd.in/gpCSbrNw #IndependentArtists #MusicDiscovery #CreatorEconomy #MusicIndustry

30,000 monthly listeners to 200,000! No label. No viral moment. A YouTube creator made his song her outro. Michael Van Wagoner - who releases music as Mykyl - started putting out indie pop in Nashville in April 2020. For years he ran the standard playbook: daily TikTok and Instagram posts, playlist pitching, editorial submissions. Temporary bumps, nothing that held. What held was creators. YouTube creator Ally Sheehan started using "How To Live" as her outro. Her audience was in Australia - a market Mykyl had never specifically targeted. Suddenly, Australia was one of his strongest markets. Another creator, SevinJ, used his music across multiple videos. Listeners followed in the Philippines, in countries he had never pitched. The 30K to 200K path did not come from a release week campaign. It came from the right music finding the right creators, and those creators' audiences becoming real fans - in markets, and sometimes in languages, he had not planned for. That is how independent music discovery actually works in 2026 and on Thematic. https://lnkd.in/guRwJNwg #IndependentArtists #MusicDiscovery #ArtistSpotlight #CreatorEconomy #MusicIndustry

The fastest-moving number in May's creator music data wasn't a genre shift. It was an energy shift. High energy tracks jumped 13.9% month-over-month - the single largest percentage move of any energy or movement category in the whole styles dataset. It's still a small share of total placements, but it's moving faster than anything else. The why is right there in the content calendar: Fitness placements surged +34% in May. Travel +30%. Both pull toward soundtracks that move. Three songs tracking that shift: bykyuna. - "falling for you" - forecasted to normalize in May. Instead it found a second wave of adopters in Fitness and Travel content. Bouncy, lighthearted contemporary R&B. 327 placements and still growing. Damien Sebe - "vacation" - +36% MoM as creators shift from indoor content to summer travel vlogs. The song title is doing exactly what it says. Citrus Avenue - "Saltwater and Sunscreen" / "Espresso Sun" - Jazz/Bossa Nova with 3.9M views from 660 placements. The highest view-per-placement ratio of any top-10 artist. Summer lifestyle content is finding it. The ambient, slow-living formula that defined Q1 isn't going away. But something is building alongside it. #MusicDiscovery #IndependentArtists #CreatorEconomy #MusicIndustry #ContentTrends

Creators say they don't want AI music. Their ratings say otherwise 🤖 That gap is what we're watching widen. On Thematic, AI-generated and hybrid-AI tracks have been rising steadily over the past year. We filter aggressively - but the harder problem isn't obvious AI content. It's the hybrid cases: tracks where AI was used for mastering, production polish, or arrangement. The output has that clean, algorithmic quality. Detection tools flag it. But it still sounds good. When we polled our creators, most said they'd actively avoid AI music in their videos. The aversion is principled, not procedural. On our end, the unsettled copyright landscape around AI-generated works is part of why we filter aggressively - but that's a separate concern from theirs. Stated preference. Revealed preference. Not the same. For independent artists, this is a more interesting problem than "AI will replace human music." The real pressure is subtler: as the definition of AI-generated expands - mastering, production tools, hybrid workflows - the line between "AI music" and "music made with AI tools" becomes impossible for most people to draw. The creators who love independent artists aren't going anywhere. But they're making decisions in real time, without the context they'd need to act on their own values. #CreatorEconomy #IndependentArtists #AIMusic #MusicIndustry #MusicDiscovery

Threads is adding playable music stickers to posts. Still in testing. But the direction feels a little like early MySpace - when featuring a specific song on your profile was a genuine personality statement. Meta is testing in-stream music playback on Threads. Users will be able to attach a specific song to a post and let viewers play it directly - album art included. Not widely available yet, but the intent behind it is worth noticing. Music returning to the social identity layer is different from music as video soundtrack. On TikTok and Reels, music is ambient context for content. A music sticker on a text post or photo is a direct declaration: here is what this moment sounds like to me. The MySpace profile song was not a monetization feature. It was a declaration. The platforms that followed largely moved music into the background. Threads is moving it back out. Whether this becomes meaningful for music discovery depends on what Meta builds behind the feature. The label deals are reportedly in progress. The question is whether the design generates real engagement around music or just competes with TikTok on surface features. For independent artists, the most interesting version of this is one where music spreads through social sharing rather than purely through algorithmic placement. That is a different discovery engine. Anyone else remember having a very deliberate MySpace profile song? 🤔 Genuinely curious what you would pick now 👀 #MusicIndustry #SocialMedia #MusicDiscovery #CreatorEconomy #PlatformStrategy
