Students from high school, college, and graduate school (and a few friends and family) checked out our Thorlabs Mobile Photonics Lab Experience when we visited New Jersey Institute of Technology again. Thank you for having us back. And thank you to everyone who helped make this possible including Tino Hofmann, Kevin Belfield, Celeste Carbonell, David Crowell, Noa Shaw, Amy Nasse, Erisa Malaj, Wesley Deeg, Aatish Gupta, Paul Xhori, Jonathan Adams, and Rutgers University–Newark.
A couple years ago, I made a promise that we would keep pursuing a Thorlabs Mobile Photonics Lab event in Newark, NJ. While recent events did not unfold as he would have hoped, I know Douglas Yorke would have been reenergized by the excitement and curiosity we witnessed on students' faces during our return visit to New Jersey Institute of Technology. On the first day, we delivered our Intro to Photonics Experience to high school students participating in NJIT's Newark Math Success Initiative (MSI), TRiO Educational Talent Search and Upward Bound Programs, NJ GEAR UP/College Bound, and the Early College Preparatory Program. We also welcomed visitors attending a physics lab open house at Rutgers University–Newark. On the second day, we provided our Quantum Optics Experience for REU students, Tino Hofmann, and members of Kevin Belfield's research family. Although it was bittersweet to deliver our first Quantum Optics Experience without Celeste Carbonell, whose creativity and dedication helped shape the program into what it is today. A special thank you to Kevin Belfield and David Crowell for organizing the events on campus and getting all the campus programs involved. I also want to recognize the City of Newark for its vision to establish the MSI program (https://lnkd.in/gjnN38yi). It was great to see high school students gaining access to advanced mathematics courses that are foundational to a STEM career, and even more exciting to hear them express genuine hope that they'll have the opportunity to continue their math studies beyond the regular school day during their senior year. With smoke settling over the Northeastern US this week due to wildfires in Canada, you might have noticed a red sun and orange haze in the sky. Did you know the color of the sky is based on how sunlight interacts with the number and size of particles in the air? It changes with the infiltration of smoke, which introduces more particulate matter into the atmosphere. The sky is blue, for example, because small particles in the atmosphere scatter short wavelengths of the visible light spectrum more strongly than long wavelengths. When smoke is in the atmosphere, it increases the amount and size of particulate matter, scattering away most of the shorter wavelengths (blue light), leaving longer wavelengths (red light) to reach our eyes! #photonics

Discovery alert: Kittens! We find more than just scientific breakthroughs here. A set of kittens were recently rescued from one of the SLAC parking lots and promptly adopted by members of our Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) X-ray laser staff. Cats and lasers are a good match by any means.
