Tin Can

Latest obsession in our house: the Tin Can phone. They're ridiculously cute when they're yapping away on it, and it's teaching them the art of conversation and keeping up friendships. "Soft skills" I'm convinced will help them become wonderful humans on this planet. Other important skills currently in progress: - Ordering for themselves in restaurants - Penmanship - A deep love of British food (we've got a newly minted Scotch egg fan over here) If the Instagram ads haven't gotten you yet, consider this your sign.

My son has made more phone calls this week than I have and he doesn't own a phone. We bought this thing called a Tin Can which is basically a retro plugged-in phone designed for kids. No screen, no apps, no internet, just a phone that makes calls. We loaded it up with grandma, grandpa, gran, and uncle Eric on speed dial and honestly I wasn't sure any of our kids would care about a device that only does one thing in a world where every device does everything. I was very wrong about that. My son is completely hooked. Some days he just works through the entire speed dial list, calling every single person on it one after the other, lying on the floor in whatever position feels right at the moment and just talking. About his day, about his favorite video games, about whatever a kid talks about when someone they love picks up the phone and says hi. (Look at this photo and tell me this isn't the most relaxed a human being has ever been while making a phone call. ?egs up, fully horizontal, zero stress. He's figured out something the rest of us forgot.) Every parent I know is wrestling with the screen question right now and I don't think there's a perfect answer. But there's something really nice about giving your kid a way to stay connected to the people who matter without handing them a device that connects to everything else too. Highly recommend looking into the Tin Can if you're a parent thinking about this stuff.

Tin Can is easily the greatest purchase my wife and I have made in the last calendar year. It's a wifi-connected landline that allows you to control who the phone can call/receive calls from. It has easy to press "speed-dial" buttons that are easy enough for a 4 year old to pick up and make a call to their grandparents. For those with toddlers/young children - you should rope all your neighborhood friends, family, and whoever else your kids would like to talk to and buy one today. Earlier this year, my wife and I ordered the Tin Can phone for our girls. What started as a sweet way to keep them connected with family, has expanded in the last two months as their friends have jumped into the fun. A couple of weeks ago I noticed this list of "Conversation Starters" taped to the wall in front of the phone. As a person who coaches adults on making real connections to do the most good in financial planning, I loved seeing the authenticity these questions create. Seeing calls go from harsh pauses to free flowing and authentic has been incredibly exciting. *the first conversation starter was something they observed, not directly contributed to... #fidelityassociate

This is what happens when calling becomes a kid thing again. "How is your summer going?" "Are you going on any trips?" "Have you gone to any summer camps?" "What teacher do you want next year?" They get genuinely excited to talk to their friends.
