About us
We are a group at UNSW School of Mathematics and Statistics focusing on trans-disciplinary Artificial Intelligence (AI) research. Our group’s research encircles methodologies and applications of artificial intelligence; particularly in areas of Bayesian deep learning, climate extremes, geoscientific models, mineral exploration, language models, and biomedicine and emerging diseases. Our key strength is in the development of novel deep-learning software frameworks with a focus on uncertainty quantification in decision-making.

Conference participation in India
Last week, I had the opportunity to travel to Indian Institute of Technology, Mandi and present an invited special session talk at the Mind, Brain and Consciousness Conference @MBCC 2026. The conference was a unique experience as it had a truly multidisciplinary nature in the area of consciousness, but was led by academics in areas of science and engineering. Conferences that bring together science and the humanities are much needed in the world led by artificial intelligence. It was a pleasure to hear the Chief Guest, Padma Subramaniam, talk about the nature of consciousness from the perspective of music, dance and classical arts. It was a great experience organising the special session with THARUN KUMAR REDDY BOLLU and hosting Sushrut Badhe, who presented a paper on Dispositional Mindfulness. I will share a recording of my extended talk in the coming weeks. This conference has motivated me to go further into the area of LLM ethics and consciousness and redefine my research direction to cater for the impact of AI on digital humanities. It was a difficult trip as the road to the campus goes up and down hills and valleys, and is about 20 km from the city of Mandi, which itself is about 5 hours drive from Chandigarh. The campus is surrounded by hills and valleys and a beautiful river system, dedicated to giving students and academics the quiet space and environment, away from major cities. Hopefully, in years to come, similar conferences emerge at the international stage in the area of AI, Consciousness and Humanities.

I think that LLM generated reviews of research papers will become the future of scientific publications. I guess this will make the publication process faster but also have similar challenges as we have not when it comes to biased and overwhelming requirements that change the focus of research papers in the review process. I think with citation based evaluations, non peer reviewed papers such as those on arXiv are making more impact especially in areas of Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence. The citations ensure that the papers have something substantial but at times poor quality papers are also cited. Academia has complex challenges. ___ Image: Queenstown

Group Beach Walk!
Our research group had a good time at Maroubra Beach, Sydney. We had a nice walk and some beach sports, it is important to relax and unwind and I believe that such events should be done at least once a month. I have noticed that it is difficult for the younger generation to connect. Such team building exercises can be done with little effort and cost. Hopefully this can motivate other research groups to get out and hopefully we can do some joint events in Sydney. t~ Artificial Intelligence
