we had the incredible privilege of welcoming a North American P-51D Mustang to Trego-Dugan Aviation at Central Nebraska Regional Airport (GRI). Originally built during World War II, the P-51 Mustang earned its place as one of the most legendary fighter aircraft in aviation history. Powered by the iconic Packard-built Rolls-Royce Merlin V-1650 engine, producing nearly 1,500 horsepower, it could exceed 430 mph while escorting Allied bombers deep into occupied Europe. Its unmatched performance and reliability helped change the course of the war. This beautifully restored aircraft proudly wears the markings of the 357th Fighter Group, one of the highest-scoring fighter groups of World War II. Its distinctive "C5" squadron code and yellow tail pay tribute to the brave pilots who flew these remarkable aircraft more than 80 years ago. Standing beside a P-51 Mustang is a powerful reminder that history is more than words in a book or exhibits in a museum. Thanks to the passion and dedication of its owners, pilots, and maintenance teams, these extraordinary aircraft continue to fly, preserving the legacy of the Greatest Generation and inspiring future aviators. It was truly an honor to welcome this living piece of aviation history to Grand Island, and we are grateful for the opportunity to witness such an iconic aircraft up close.
