For more than 10 years, Trek Medics Intl has been working with emergency and crisis response agencies who are serving at-risk and vulnerable populations around the world. One program we're especially proud of is with the City of Los Angeles' CIRCLE program, which provides unarmed crisis response for the homeless population. In an awesome partnership with Aselo, and with incredible support from Twilio, our integrated tech platforms have enabled the CIRCLE program to respond to more than 2,500 crisis incidents each month, contributing to a 15% drop in homelessness in Los Angeles over the past year. Thanks to CIRCLE, the City of LA is ensuring that specially trained crisis responders are providing critical services to unhoused individuals while taking a huge burden off of LAPD's shoulders. California is on the verge of a costly mistake — and the people who will pay for it are those in mental health crisis. Over the past several years, Trek Medics International has partnered with programs in 15 California counties to support Mobile Crisis Response Teams (MCRT) through our Beacon dispatch platform. These teams — built with strong support from Gavin Newsom's administration — have delivered signficant impact: ✅ Fewer unnecessary emergency department visits for behavioral health needs that EDs aren't equipped to treat ✅ Fewer people with mental illness cycling through jails simply because law enforcement had no alternative ✅ Fewer costly admissions to state-funded psychiatric hospitals — because people got help where they needed it: at home and in the community Now, the Newsom administration is preparing to gut MCRT funding — and replace specialized mental health clinicians with paramedics, firefighters, and police officers who lack the training (and time!) to provide equivalent care, at significantly higher cost. Let's be clear about roles: 🚑 EMS treats medical emergencies. 🚒 Fire departments handle fire and rescue. 👮 Law enforcement ensures public safety. 🧠 Mobile Crisis Teams treat mental health crises — especially for people who aren't having a medical emergency, aren't on fire, and aren't breaking the law. This isn't a cost-saving measure. It's a cost-shifting measure — one that will drive up spending on hospitalizations and incarcerations while reducing access to appropriate, effective care. We urge Gavin Newsom, California Department of Health Care Services, California Department of Health Care Access and Information, and Assemblymember Mia Bonta to reconsider. The data is on our side. This week marks 16 years since Trek Medics was founded in San Diego, California. Originally intended to be a go-between for EMS agencies in the US to donate equipment and training to EMS agencies in low- and middle-income countries, Trek Medics has since turned into something none of us would have imagined at the outset -- a non-profit tech company building a dispatch platform that's been used over 200,000 times to coordinate local responders to emergency incidents around the globe. In 2014, we began a partnership with the Tanzania Rural Health Movement to launch an innovative prehospital emergency response system in Mwanza, Tanzania. that relies on motorcycle taxi drivers as first responders. Today, an 8-year study on the response times of that system were published in the peer-reviewed journal, Injury. In short, it's true: Responders on motorcycles dispatched through their personal phones can respond to emergencies as quickly as ambulances -- and for far less money -- showing that community-based EMS systems can do a lot to improve access to trauma care in resource-limited settings. It's a genuine honor to be featured in the Cisco Foundation's 2025 Impact Report! Starting in 2019, Cisco Foundation has been supporting us with crucial funds and technical expertise as we've scaled our Beacon Dispatch platform to serve a diverse group of emergency and crisis response services. Thanks to their support, Beacon has been used to dispatch and coordinate local response agencies in countries around the world, whether during hurricanes, wildfires, civil unrest and conflict zones, in support of EMS agencies, fire departments, search and rescue teams and alternative response systems. As always, the NetHope Global Summit last week in Amsterdam was a fantastic opportunity to reconnect with a truly impressive and fully committed community of folks working hard to make the world a better place. We had the privilege of presenting on Trek Medics International's journey to achieve financial sustainability -- a journey that was sparked back in 2016 when USAID unexpectedly denied us continued funding for programs that were well underway (...sound familiar?). While our story is unique, most of the NGOs in the room were in a similar position, trying to figure out how to diversify their funding streams while continuing to deliver critical services around the globe. Necessity is the mother of innovation, so it'll be exciting to see how the entire sector adapts. Many thanks to PagerDuty, Cisco, Twilio, the The Patrick J.
