Our interns are helping shape the future of fusion, and we're excited to introduce two more members of our 2026 summer intern class. We are pleased to welcome Jhovanna García as a Fusion Engineering Intern. Jhovanna received two undergraduate degrees in mechanical engineering and dance from San Diego State University. She went on to complete her M.S. in Nuclear Engineering from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and has resided in East Tennessee ever since. Jhovanna’s previous experience in fusion is playing a large role in helping our nuclear engineering team this summer. Next, we have ABRAHAM E., a Plasma Diagnostics Physics Intern. Abraham is from Southern California and received his B.S. in physics from the University of California, Los Angeles. While completing his undergraduate degree, Abraham worked at two different laboratories as a plasma physics student researcher. Based in the Knoxville office, Abraham is working with the Plasma Diagnostics team on the conceptual probe design for Project Infinity. We're proud to share that Type One Energy, in collaboration with UW-Madison Department of Nuclear Engineering & Engineering Physics, has been selected as a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Genesis Mission Awardee for our project, "Stellarator Blanket Optimization with Differentiable Monte Carlo Neutronics." Chris Hegna, Type One Energy's VP of Stellarator Optimization and a professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, is leading the collaboration on behalf of Type One Energy. "We're excited to work with our Genesis Mission Awardee partners to substantially improve our ability to include stellarator blanket optimization as part of an integrated stellarator design process." We appreciate the U.S. Department of Energy and the Office of the Under Secretary for Science, U.S. Department of Energy for supporting this important work. Prof. Paul Wilson and David R. Smith will lead projects that integrate AI and machine learning to drive energy innovation. These Phase I awards are a part of a national effort to integrate AI in research workflows, accelerating breakthroughs in areas of growing importance like clean energy and national security. Working alongside industry, university, and national laboratory partners, NEEP is tackling complex engineering challenges to transform the energy landscape. Smith will enhance plasma control for fusion energy systems in collaboration with other scientists at UW–Madison and the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. Advanced AI systems will allow the team to rapidly validate the technologies and predictive models needed to bring commercial fusion energy closer to reality. In addition, Prof. Ben Lindley and Prof. Juliana Pacheco Duarte are collaborators on a project led by Prof. WooHyun Jung at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas. In partnership with Sandia National Laboratories and NuScale Power, the project will develop and implement a large language model-based agentic AI assistant to streamline nuclear reactor design, safety analysis, and licensing, under human authority. Fusion energy just took another step toward commercial deployment. Barclays today announced its support for the UK Infinity Fusion Consortium, joining SMI members Type One Energy, Tokamak Energy and AECOM in advancing the development of a commercial fusion power plant in the UK. Barclays will bring its expertise across energy, infrastructure, project finance and capital markets to help the consortium attract private investment, engage the broader UK supply chain and align with the UK Government's Fusion Strategy. The goal: a commercially viable fusion power plant operational in the UK by the mid-2030s. This is the Sustainable Markets Initiative's private sector collaboration at work. What does it take to build a successful fusion energy project? The answer starts long before construction or commissioning. It starts with #community. Last month, we welcomed more than 150 community members to our first open house near the Tennessee Valley Authority's Bull Run Energy Complex in Clinton, Tennessee. The event provided an opportunity for open conversations about fusion energy, safety, workforce development, and the future of the Bull Run site. At Type One Energy, we believe successful energy projects are built in partnership with the communities they serve. The future of fusion will be shaped not only by technological breakthroughs, but also by the trust, transparency, and relationships we build along the way.

As our Infinity Two fusion power plant and others begin coming online in the mid-2030s, fusion has the potential to become a major part of the global energy landscape—providing abundant, carbon-free energy for generations to come. As Thomas says in the episode, we need an all-hands-on-deck approach to meeting our immediate energy needs, but eventually fusion will produce enough power for all of mankind. Olivia is a senior at Winthrop University studying Integrated Marketing & Communications. This summer, she's working from our Knoxville headquarters with the Marketing & Communications team to develop an educational website for students and educators to learn more about fusion energy and its potential. Lily is a recent graduate of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, where she received her B.S. in Business Administration with a concentration in Marketing. She is already assisting the Marketing & Communications team with several initiatives including updating Type One Energy’s new website and more.
