I have just arrived in Damascus for a visit of solidarity with the people of Syria. The country has an extraordinary opportunity to help build a future where diversity is celebrated as a source of strength, where institutions serve all citizens, where women and men participate fully in shaping their country, where young people can fulfil their aspirations, and where every person can live in dignity, equality, security, and peace. The United Nations will be a steadfast partner of the Syrian people in that journey. And I appeal to the international community to spare no effort to support the country at this critical time.

Saturday is the International Day of Women and Girls of African Descent. Women and girls of African descent continue to face multiple forms of barriers and discriminations. Despite these challenges, they continue to rise—leading movements, excelling in academics and careers, advocating for justice, and breaking generational cycles of poverty and exclusion. Greater efforts are needed to support and empower them.
